The People Complain

And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

І народ почав нарікати перед Господом на злі обставини. І Господь, запалавши гнівом на Мойсея, і розгорівся між ними Господній вогонь і поглинув якусь частину табору.

And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.

Тож народ заволав до Мойсея. А Мойсей помолився до Господа, і вогонь ущух.

3

And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.

І названо те місце Загорання, бо між ними розгорівся Господній вогонь.

4

And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

Натовп різношерстих людей, які були між ними, сповнилися сильною пожадливістю і, сівши, вони заплакали, а разом з ними — і ізраїльські сини, та й сказали: Хто нас нагодує м’ясом?

We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

Ми згадуємо рибу, яку їли даром в Єгипті, огірки, дині, порей, цибулю і часник.

But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

Тепер же наша душа зів’яла; нічого немає перед нашими очима — лише одна манна.

And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.

А манна — мов насіння коріандру, а на вигляд, як гірський кришталь.

And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

А народ ходив і збирав; і мололи її на жорнах чи товкли в ступі, і варили її в горщику, і робили з неї коржики, і був смак її — наче смак коржів, приготованих на олії.

And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

Тож коли на табір вночі спадала роса, тоді випадала з нею і манна.

The Complaint of Moses

Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

10

І Мойсей почув, як вони плакали у своїх групах — кожний біля своїх дверей. Господь запалав гнівом, і в очах Мойсея це було злом.

11

And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

І Мойсей промовив до Господа: Навіщо Ти вчинив таке зло Своєму слузі, і чому я не знайшов милості у Твоїх очах, що Ти поклав нападки цього народу на мене?

12

Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

Хіба я зачав у лоні весь цей народ, чи я їх породив, що Ти мені кажеш: Візьми їх на своє лоно, як годувальниця бере грудну дитину, щоб привести в край, котрий Я пообіцяв у клятві їхнім батькам?

13

Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

Звідки в мене м’ясо, щоб дати всьому цьому народові? Адже вони плачуть переді мною, кажучи: Дай нам м’яса, щоб ми наїлися!

14

I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

14

Я сам не в змозі носити цей народ, бо дуже тяжкою для мене є ця справа.

15

And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

15

Якщо ж Ти таким чином поступаєш зі мною, то вбий [1] мене, якщо я знайшов милість у Твоїх очах, щоб мені не бачити мого страждання.

16

Seventy Elders to Help Moses

And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.

16

І тоді Господь сказав Мойсеєві: Збери Мені сімдесят чоловіків з ізраїльських старійшин, яких сам знаєш, що вони — старійшини народу та їхні книжники, і приведи їх до намету свідчення — хай стануть там з тобою.

17

And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

17

Я зійду і розмовлятиму там з тобою, і візьму від Духа, який на тобі, і покладу на них, і допомагатимуть тобі з нападками народу, і ти не нестимеш їх сам.

18

The People Receive Meat for a Month

And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.

А народові скажеш: Очистіться до завтрашнього дня, і будете їсти м’ясо, бо ви плакали перед Господом, кажучи: Хто нас нагодує м’ясом? Адже в Єгипті нам було добре! Тож Господь дасть вам їсти м’ясо, і їстимете м’ясо.

19

Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;

19

Не один день будете їсти, і не два, ні п’ять днів, ні десять днів, ні двадцять днів.

20

But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

20

Упродовж місяця будете їсти, поки не вийде з ваших ніздрів і не стане остогидлим для вас, бо ви не послухалися Господа, Який є між вами, а плакали перед Ним, кажучи: Навіщо нам було виходити з Єгипту?

21

Moses' Faith Staggered

And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.

А Мойсей відказав: Того народу, між яким є і я, — шістсот тисяч піших! А Ти сказав: Дам їм м’яса, і їстимуть упродовж місяця!

22

Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?

Хіба що вони поріжуть овець і волів, щоб їм вистачило? Чи вся морська риба буде зібрана для них, щоби було їм достатньо?

23

And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

23

Та Господь сказав Мойсеєві: Хіба Господня рука не спроможна на це? Зараз же побачиш, чи захопить зненацька тебе Моє слово, чи ні!

24

And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

24

Мойсей вийшов і переказав народові Господні слова, і зібрав сімдесятьох чоловіків зі старійшин народу, і поставив їх довкола намету.

25

And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

А Господь зійшов у хмарі, і заговорив до нього. І взяв від Духа, що на ньому, і поклав на сімдесятьох чоловіків-старійшин. Як тільки спочив на них Дух, то вони деякий час пророкували, та згодом перестали.

26

But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.

Та в таборі залишилося двоє чоловіків; ім’я одного — Елдад, ім’я другого — Модад; і на них спочив Дух, а вони були з тих, які були записані, та не пішли до намету, тож вони пророкували в таборі.

27

And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.

27

І прибіг юнак, і сповістив Мойсеєві, сказавши: Елдад і Модад пророкують у таборі!

28

And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.

28

У відповідь Ісус, син Навина, — вибраний, який допомагав Мойсеєві, — сказав: Володарю Мойсею, заборони їм!

29

And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

29

Та Мойсей йому відповів: Хіба не ревнуєш ти через мене? Хай же стане весь Господній народ пророками, коли Господь дасть йому Свого Духа!

30

And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

30

І Мойсей пішов до табору з ізраїльськими старійшинами.

31

The Quail and the Plague

And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.

А від Господа вийшов вітер і навів перепелів з моря, і кинув на табір та довкола табору — на день ходи звідси і на день ходи звідти — на якихось два лікті від землі.

32

And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

32

І встав увесь народ і весь день, усю ніч і весь наступний день збирав перепелів; хто мало назбирав — якихось десять мірок. І всі в’ялили їх собі на сушилках довкола табору.

33

And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

Ще м’ясо було на їхніх зубах, не бувши пожованим, як Господь запалав гнівом на народ, і уразив Господь народ великою пошестю.

34

And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.

34

І названо те місце Гробницями жадоби, бо там поховали ненаситних людей.

35

And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.

35

Від Гробниць жадоби народ вирушив до Асироту, і перебував народ у Асироті.
