New Living Translation

  • Baal Worship at Peor

And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
  • Moab Seduces Israel

While the Israelites were camped at Acacia Grove,a some of the men defiled themselves by havingb sexual relations with local Moabite women.
  • And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
  • These women invited them to attend sacrifices to their gods, so the Israelites feasted with them and worshiped the gods of Moab.
  • And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
  • In this way, Israel joined in the worship of Baal of Peor, causing the LORD’s anger to blaze against his people.
  • And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
  • The LORD issued the following command to Moses: “Seize all the ringleaders and execute them before the LORD in broad daylight, so his fierce anger will turn away from the people of Israel.”
  • And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
  • So Moses ordered Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death the men under your authority who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
  • Phinehas Kills Zimri and Cozbi

And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
  • Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into his tent, right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as everyone was weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.c
  • And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
  • When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spear
  • And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
  • and rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped,
  • And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
  • but not before 24,000 people had died.
  • Phinehas' Reward

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  • Then the LORD said to Moses,
  • Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
  • “Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest has turned my anger away from the Israelites by being as zealous among them as I was. So I stopped destroying all Israel as I had intended to do in my zealous anger.
  • Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
  • Now tell him that I am making my special covenant of peace with him.
  • And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
  • In this covenant, I give him and his descendants a permanent right to the priesthood, for in his zeal for me, his God, he purified the people of Israel, making them right with me.d
  • Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
  • The Israelite man killed with the Midianite woman was named Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a family from the tribe of Simeon.
  • And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
  • The woman’s name was Cozbi; she was the daughter of Zur, the leader of a Midianite clan.
  • A Warning against the Midianites

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  • Then the LORD said to Moses,
  • Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
  • “Attack the Midianites and destroy them,
  • For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
  • because they assaulted you with deceit and tricked you into worshiping Baal of Peor, and because of Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed at the time of the plague because of what happened at Peor.”
