    And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
  • While they were camped near the Jordan River on the plains of Moab opposite Jericho, the LORD said to Moses,
  • Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
  • “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: When you cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan,
  • Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:
  • you must drive out all the people living there. You must destroy all their carved and molten images and demolish all their pagan shrines.
  • And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it.
  • Take possession of the land and settle in it, because I have given it to you to occupy.
  • And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.
  • You must distribute the land among the clans by sacred lot and in proportion to their size. A larger portion of land will be allotted to each of the larger clans, and a smaller portion will be allotted to each of the smaller clans. The decision of the sacred lot is final. In this way, the portions of land will be divided among your ancestral tribes.
  • But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
  • But if you fail to drive out the people who live in the land, those who remain will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land where you live.
  • Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.
  • And I will do to you what I had planned to do to them.”
