Tradition and Vain Worship

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

1

Тоді до Ісуса прийшли фарисеї та книжники з Єрусалиму н сказали:

Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

2

„Чого Твої учні ламають переда́ння старших? Бо не миють вони своїх рук, коли хліб споживають“.

3

But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

3

А Він відповів і промовив до них: „А чого й ви порушуєте Божу заповідь ради переда́ння вашого?

4

For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

4

Бо Бог заповів: „Шануй ба́тька та матір“, та: „Хто злорі́чить на ба́тька чи матір, — хай смертю помре“.

5

But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

5

А ви кажете: Коли скаже хто ба́тьку чи матері: „Те, чим би ви скористатись від мене хотіли, то дар Богові“,

6

And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

6

то може вже й не шанувати той ба́тька свого або матір свою. Так ви ради переда́ння вашого зні́вечили Боже Слово.

Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

Лицеміри! Про вас добре Ісая пророкував, говорячи:

8

This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

8

„Оці люди уста́ми шанують Мене, серце ж їхнє дале́ко від Мене!

9

But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

9

Та однак надаре́мне шанують Мене, бо навчають наук — лю́дських за́повідей“.

10

What Defiles a Man

And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

10

І Він покликав наро́д, і промовив до нього: „Послухайте та зрозумійте!

11

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

11

Не те, що вхо́дить до уст, люди́ну скверни́ть, але те, що виходить із уст, те люди́ну скверни́ть“.

12

Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

12

Тоді учні Його приступили й сказали Йому: „Чи Ти знаєш, що фарисеї, почуши це слово, спокуси́лися?“

13

But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

13

А Він відповів і сказав: „Усяка росли́на, яку насадив не Отець Мій Небесний, буде вирвана з коренем.

14

Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

14

Залишіть ви їх: це сліпі повода́тарі для сліпих. А коли сліпий водить сліпого, — обо́є до ями впаду́ть“.

15

Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.

15

А Петро відповів і до Нього сказав: „Поясни нам цю при́тчу“.

16

And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

16

А Він відказав: „Чи ж і ви розумі́ння не маєте?

17

Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

17

Чи ж ви не розумієте, що все те, що́ входить до уст, вступає в живіт, та й назовні виходить?

18

But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

18

Що ж виходить із уст, те походить із серця, — і воно опога́нює люди́ну.

19

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

19

Бо з серця виходять лихі думки́, душогубства, пере́люби, розпуста, крадіж, неправдиві засвідчення, богознева́ги.

20

These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

20

Оце те, що люди́ну опога́нює. А їсти руками невмитими, — не опога́нює це люди́ни!“

21

The Faith of the Canaanite Woman

Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

21

І, вийшовши звідти, Ісус відійшов у землі ти́рські й сидо́нські.

22

And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

22

І ось жінка одна ханане́янка, із тих околиць прийшовши, заголосила до Нього й сказала: „Змилуйся надо мною, Господи, Сину Давидів, — де́мон тяжко дочку́ мою мучить!“

23

But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

23

А Він їй не казав ані слова. Тоді учні Його, підійшовши, благали Його та казали: „Відпусти її, бо кричить услід за нами!“

24

But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

24

А Він відповів і сказав: „Я по́сланий тільки до овечок загинулих дому Ізраїлевого“.

25

Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

25

А вона, підійшовши, уклонилась Йому та й сказала: „Господи, допоможи мені!“

26

But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

26

А Він відповів і сказав: „Не годи́ться взяти хліб у дітей, і кинути щеня́там“.

27

And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

27

Вона ж відказала: „Так, Господи! Але ж і щеня́та їдять ті кришки́, що спадають зо сто́лу їхніх панів“.

28

Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

28

Тоді відповів і сказав їй Ісус: „О жінко, твоя віра велика, — нехай буде тобі, я́к ти хочеш“! І тієї години дочка́ її ви́дужала.

29

The Feeding of the Four Thousand

And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.

29

І, відійшовши звідти, Ісус прибув до Галіле́йського моря, і, зійшовши на го́ру, сів там.

30

And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:

30

І приступило до Нього багато наро́ду, що мали з собою кривих, калік, сліпих, німих і інших багато, і клали їх до Ісусових ніг. І Він уздоро́влював їх.

31

Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

31

А наро́д не вихо́див із дива, бо бачив, що говорять німі, каліки стаю́ть здорові, криві ходять, і бачать сліпі, — і сла́вив він Бога Ізраїлевого!

32

Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

32

А Ісус Своїх у́чнів покликав і сказав: „Жаль Мені цих людей, що вже три́ дні зо Мною знахо́дяться, але їсти не мають чого́; відпустити їх без їжі не хо́чу, щоб вони не ослабли в дорозі“.

33

And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?

33

А учні Йому відказали: „Де́ нам узяти стільки хліба в пустині, щоб нагодувати стільки наро́ду?“

34

And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.

34

А Ісус запитав їх: „Скільки маєте хліба?“ Вони ж відказали: „Семеро, та трохи рибок“.

35

And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

35

І Він ізвелів на землі посідати наро́дові.

36

And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

36

І, взявши сім хлібів і риби, віддавши Богу подяку, поламав і дав у́чням Своїм, а учні наро́дові.

37

And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

37

І всі їли й наси́тилися, а з позосталих кусків назбирали сім ко́шиків по́вних...

38

And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.

38

Їдців же було чотири тисячі мужа, окрім жінок та дітей.

39

And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

39

І, відпустивши наро́д, усів Він до чо́вна, і прибув до землі Магдали́нської.
