The Parable of the Banquet

And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,

А Ісус, відповідаючи, знов почав говорити їм при́тчами, кажучи:

The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

„Царство Небесне подібне одно́му царе́ві, що весі́лля справляв був для сина свого́.

3

And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

3

І послав він своїх рабів покликати тих, хто був на весі́лля запрошений, — та ті не хотіли прийти.

4

Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

4

Зно́ву послав він інших рабів, наказуючи: „Скажіть запрошеним: Ось я приготува́в обід свій, закололи бики й відгодо́ване, — і все готове. Ідіть на весі́лля!“

But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

5

Та вони злегковажили та порозхо́дились, — той на поле своє, а той на свій торг.

And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

6

А останні, похапавши рабів його́, знущалися, та й повбивали їх.

7

But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

7

І розгнівався цар, і послав своє ві́йсько, — і вигубив тих убійників, а їхнє місто спалив.

8

Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.

8

Тоді каже рабам своїм: „Весі́лля готове, але́ недостойні були́ ті покликані.

9

Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

9

Тож підіть на роздорі́жжя, і кого тільки спіткаєте, — кличте їх на весі́лля“.

10

So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

10

І вийшовши раби ті на роздоріжжя, зібрали всіх, кого тільки спіткали, — злих і добрих. І весільна кімна́та гістьми́ перепо́внилась.

11

And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

Як прийшов же той цар на гостей подивитись, побачив там чоловіка, в одежу весі́льну не вбра́ного,

12

And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

12

та й каже йому: „Як ти, друже, ввійшов сюди, не мавши одежі весільної?“ Той же мовчав.

13

Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13

Тоді́ цар сказав своїм слу́гам: „Зв'яжіть йому ноги та руки, та й киньте до зо́внішньої те́мряви, — буде плач там і скрегіт зубів“.

14

For many are called, but few are chosen.

14

Бо багато покли́каних, — та ви́браних мало“.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

15

Тоді фарисеї пішли й умовлялись, я́к зловити на слові Його.

16

And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

16

І посилають до Нього своїх учнів із іродія́нами, і кажуть: „Учителю, знаємо ми, що Ти справедливий, і наставляєш на Божу дорогу правдиво, і не зважаєш ні на кого, бо на лю́дське обличчя не дивишся Ти.

17

Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

17

Скажи ж нам, як здається Тобі: чи годиться давати податок для ке́саря, чи ні?“

18

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

18

А Ісус, знавши їхнє лукавство, сказав: „Чого ви, лицеміри, Мене випробо́вуєте?

19

Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

19

Покажіть Мені гріш податко́вий“. І прине́сли динарія Йому.

20

And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

20

А Він каже до них: „Чий це образ і напис?“

21

They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

21

Ті відказують: „Ке́сарів“. Тоді каже Він їм: „Тож віддайте кесареве — кесареві, а Богові — Боже“.

22

When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

22

А почувши таке, вони диву далися. І, лишивши Його, відійшли.

23

Sadducees Question the Resurrection

The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

Того дня приступили до Нього саддуке́ї, що твердять, ніби нема воскресіння, і запитали Його,

24

Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

24

та й сказали: „Учителю, Мойсей наказав: „Коли хто помре, не мавши дітей, то нехай його брат візьме вдову́ його, — і відно́вить насіння для брата свого“.

25

Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:

25

Було ж у нас сім братів. І перший, одружи́вшись, умер, і, не мавши насіння, зоставив дружи́ну свою братові своєму.

26

Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

26

Так само і другий, і третій, — аж до сьомого.

27

And last of all the woman died also.

27

А по всіх вмерла й жінка.

28

Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

28

Отож, у воскре́сенні котро́му з сімох вона дружи́ною буде? Бо всі мали її“.

29

Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

29

Ісус же промовив у відповідь їм: „Помиляєтесь ви, не знавши Писа́ння, ні Божої сили.

30

For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

30

Бо в воскресінні ні женяться, ані заміж виходять, але як Анголи́ ті на небі.

31

But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

31

А про воскресіння померлих хіба не читали проре́ченого вам від Бога, що каже:

32

I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

32

„Я Бог Авраамів, і Бог Ісаків, і Бог Яковів; Бог не є Богом мертвих, а живих“.

33

And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

33

А наро́д, чувши це, дивувався науці Його.

34

The Greatest Commandment

But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

34

Фарисеї ж, почувши, що Він у́ста замкнув саддуке́ям, зібралися ра́зом.

35

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

35

І спитався один із них, учитель Зако́ну, Його випробо́вуючи й кажучи:

36

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

36

„Учителю, котра́ заповідь найбільша в Зако́ні?“

37

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

37

Він же промовив йому́: „Люби Господа Бога свого всім серцем своїм, і всією душею своєю, і всією своєю думкою“.

38

This is the first and great commandment.

38

Це найбільша й найперша заповідь.

39

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

39

А друга одна́кова з нею: „Люби свого ближнього, як само́го себе́“.

40

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

40

На двох оцих заповідях увесь Зако́н і Пророки стоять“.

41

Whose Son is the Christ?

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

41

Коли ж фарисеї зібрались, Ісус їх запитав,

42

Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

42

і сказав: „Що́ ви думаєте про Христа? Чий Він син?“ Вони Йому кажуть: „Давидів“.

43

He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

43

Він до них промовляє: „Як же то силою Духа Давид Його Господом зве, коли каже:

44

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?

44

„Промовив Господь Господе́ві моєму: сядь право́руч Мене, доки не покладу Я Твоїх ворогів підніжком ногам Твоїм“.

45

If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

45

Тож, коли Давид зве Його Господом, — як же Він йому син?“

46

And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

46

І ніхто не спромігся відпові́сти Йому ані сло́ва... І ніхто з того дня не наважувався більш питати Його.
