Woes to Scribes and Pharisees
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Тоді промовив Ісус до народу й до учнів Своїх,
Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
і сказав: „На сиді́нні Мойсеєвім усілися книжники та фарисеї.
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Тож усе, що́ вони скажуть вам, — робіть і виконуйте; та за вчинками їхніми не робіть, бо говорять вони — та не роблять того́!
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
Вони ж в'яжуть тяжкі тягарі, і кладуть їх на лю́дські раме́на, самі ж навіть пальцем своїм не хотять їх пору́шити.
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
Усі ж учинки свої вони роблять, щоб їх бачили люди, і богомі́лля свої розширяють, і здовжують ки́тиці.
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
І люблять вони передніші місця на бенке́тах, і передніші лавки́ в синагогах,
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
і привіти на ринках, і щоб звали їх люди: Учителю!
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
А ви вчителями не звіться, — бо один вам Учитель, а ви всі брати́.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
І не називайте нікого отцем на землі, — бо один вам Отець, що на небі.
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
І не звіться наста́вниками, — бо один вам Наста́вник, — Христос.
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Хто між вами найбільший, хай слугою вам буде!
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Хто бо підно́ситься, — буде понижений, хто ж понижується, той піднесе́ться.
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Горе ж вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що перед людьми́ зачиняєте Царство Небесне, — бо й самі ви не вхо́дите, ані тих, хто хоче ввійти, увійти не пускаєте!
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
(Горе ж вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що вдови́ні хати поїдаєте, і напо́каз молитесь довго, — через те осуд тяжчий ви при́ймете!)
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що обходите море та землю, щоб придбати нововірця одно́го; а коли те стається, то робите його сином геє́нни, вдвоє гіршим від вас!
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
Горе вам, проводирі́ ви сліпі, що говорите: „Коли хто поклянеться храмом, то нічого; а хто поклянеться золотом храму, то той винуватий“.
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
Нерозумні й сліпі, — що бо більше: чи золото, чи той храм, що освячує золото?
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
І: „Коли хто поклянеться же́ртівником, — то нічого, а хто поклянеться жертвою, що на нім, то він винуватий“.
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
Нерозумні й сліпі, — що́ бо більше: чи жертва, чи той же́ртівник, що освячує жертву?
Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
Отож, хто клянеться же́ртівником, — клянеться ним та всім, що на ньому.
And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
І хто храмом клянеться, — клянеться ним та Тим, Хто живе в нім.
And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
І хто небом клянеться, — клянеться Божим престолом і Тим, Хто на ньому сидить.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що даєте десятину із м'я́ти, і га́нусу й кми́ну, але найважливіше в Зако́ні поки́нули: суд, милосе́рдя та віру; це треба робити, і того не ки́дати.
Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Проводирі́ ви сліпі, що відціджуєте комаря́, а верблю́да ковтаєте!
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що чистите зовнішність ку́хля та миски, а всере́дині повні вони здирства й кривди!
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Фарисею сліпий, — очисти перше сере́дину кухля, щоб чистий він був і назо́вні!
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що подібні до гробі́в побі́лених, які гарними зверху здаються, а всере́дині повні трупних кісто́к та всякої нечи́стости!
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Так і ви, — назовні здаєтеся лю́дям за праведних, а всере́дині повні лицемі́рства та беззаконня!
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, що пророкам надгро́бники ставите, і праведникам прикраша́єте пам'ятники,
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
та говорите: „Якби ми жили́ за днів наших батьків, то ми не були б спільника́ми їхніми в крові пророків“.
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Тим самим на себе свідкуєте, що сини ви убивців пророків.
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
О змії, о ро́де гадю́чий, — я́к ви втечете від за́суду до геє́нни?
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
І ось тому́ посилаю до вас Я пророків, і мудрих, і книжників; частину їх ви повбиваєте та розіпне́те, а частину їх ви бичува́тимете в синагогах своїх, і будете гнати з міста до міста.
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
Щоб спала на вас уся праведна кров, що пролита була на землі, від крови Авеля праведного, аж до крови Заха́рія, Варахі́їного сина, що ви замордували його між храмом і же́ртівником!
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Поправді кажу вам: Оце все спаде на рід цей!
Lament over Jerusalem
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Єрусалиме, Єрусалиме, що вбиваєш пророків та каменуєш посланих до те́бе! Скільки разів Я хотів зібрати діти твої, як квочка збирає під крила курчаток своїх, — та ви не захотіли!
