Woes to Scribes and Pharisees
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Тоді Ісус промовив до натовпу і до своїх учнів,
Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
кажучи: На сидіння Мойсея посідали книжники та фарисеї.
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Усе, що лише скажуть вам, робіть і виконуйте, але так, як вони, не чиніть, бо вони кажуть і не роблять.
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
Вони в’яжуть важкі, непосильні тягарі й кладуть на плечі людей, а самі пальцем своїм не хочуть їх поворухнути.
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
Усі свої вчинки вони роблять так, щоб їх бачили люди. Роблять ширшими свої філактерії [1] та побільшують китиці,
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
люблять почесні місця на бенкетах і перші місця в синагогах,
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
і вітання на майданах, щоб їх кликали люди: Учителю!
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
Ви ж не називайте себе вчителями, бо один є у вас Учитель, а всі ви — брати.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
І не називайте нікого на землі отцем, бо є один у вас Отець — Небесний.
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
Не називайтеся і наставниками, бо є один у вас Наставник — Христос.
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Найбільший з вас нехай буде вам слугою.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Тому що хто буде себе підносити, буде принижений, а той, хто буде принижувати себе, буде піднесений.
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Горе ж вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, тому що ви зачиняєте Царство Небесне перед людьми: і самі не входите, і тим, які йдуть, не дозволяєте ввійти.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
[Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, тому що ви поїдаєте хати вдовиць і про людське око довго молитеся, — за це отримаєте дуже тяжкий осуд].
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, які обходите море і суходіл, аби здобути бодай одного новонаверненого, а коли це станеться, то робите його сином геєни — вдвічі гіршим за вас.
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
Горе вам, проводирі сліпі, які говорите: Хто клянеться храмом, то це нічого, а хто клянеться золотом храму, той винний.
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
Безумні й сліпі! Бо що є більше: золото чи храм, який освячує золото?
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
І: Хто клянеться жертовником, то це нічого, а хто клянеться даром, що на ньому, той винний.
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
[Нерозумні й] сліпі! Що більше: дар чи жертовник, який освячує той дар?
Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
Отже, хто клянеться жертовником, клянеться ним і тим, що є на ньому;
And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
і хто клянеться храмом, клянеться ним і Тим, Хто живе в ньому;
And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
і хто клянеться небом, клянеться Божим престолом і Тим, Хто сидить на ньому.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, бо даєте десятину з м’яти, кропу й кмину, а занедбали найважливіше в Законі: суд, милосердя та віру; і це належить робити, і того не залишати.
Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Проводирі ви сліпі, які відціджуєте комара, а верблюда ковтаєте.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, бо очищаєте чашу й миску ззовні, а всередині вони повні здирства та ненаситності.
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Фарисею сліпий, очисти спершу чашу всередині, щоб і ззовні вона стала чистою.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, бо ви подібні до гробів побілених, які ззовні видаються гарними, а всередині повні мертвих кісток і всякої нечистоти.
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Так і ви ззовні видаєтеся людям праведними, а всередині повні лицемірства й беззаконня.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Горе вам, книжники та фарисеї, лицеміри, бо будуєте гробниці пророкам і прикрашаєте пам’ятники праведникам,
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
і кажете: Коли б ми жили у дні наших батьків, то не були б їхніми спільниками в пролитті крові пророків!
Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Отак свідчите самі собі, що ви є синами тих, хто вбивав пророків.
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Змії, поріддя гадюче! Як втечете від суду геєни?
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
Тому Я посилаю до вас пророків, мудреців та книжників; з них деяких уб’єте і розіпнете, а деяких будете бичувати у ваших синагогах і гнати з міста до міста,
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
щоб упала на вас уся кров праведників, пролита на землі: від крові праведного Авеля до крові Захарії, сина Варахіїного, якого вбили ви між храмом і жертовником.
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Запевняю вас: це все прийде на цей рід.
Lament over Jerusalem
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Єрусалиме, Єрусалиме, що вбиваєш пророків і побиваєш камінням посланих до тебе! Скільки разів хотів Я зібрати твоїх дітей, як квочка збирає своїх курчат під крила, та ви не захотіли!
