King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • The Temptation of Jesus

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
  • The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil.
  • And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
  • For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.
  • And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
  • During that time the devila came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”
  • But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
  • But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say,
‘People do not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’b
  • Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
  • Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple,
  • And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
  • and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say,
‘He will order his angels to protect you.
And they will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’c
  • Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
  • Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’d
  • Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
  • Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
  • And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
  • “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”
  • Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
  • “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say,
‘You must worship the Lord your God
    and serve only him.’e
  • Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
  • Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.
  • Jesus Begins His Ministry

    Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

  • The Ministry of Jesus Begins

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
  • And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
  • He went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.
  • That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
  • This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah:
  • The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
  • “In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali,
beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River,
in Galilee where so many Gentiles live,
  • The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
  • the people who sat in darkness
    have seen a great light.
And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow,
    a light has shined.”f
  • From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
  • From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.g
  • Jesus Calls His First Disciples

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

  • The First Disciples

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers — Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew — throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.
  • And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
  • Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
  • And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
  • And they left their nets at once and followed him.
  • And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
  • A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too.
  • And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
  • They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.
  • Jesus Heals Great Multitudes

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

  • Crowds Follow Jesus

Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.
  • And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
  • News about him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon possessed or epileptic or paralyzed — he healed them all.
  • And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
  • Large crowds followed him wherever he went — people from Galilee, the Ten Towns,h Jerusalem, from all over Judea, and from east of the Jordan River.
