King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • The Mission of John the Baptist

    The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
  • John the Baptist Prepares the Way

This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.a It began
  • As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
  • just as the prophet Isaiah had written:
“Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
and he will prepare your way.b
  • The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
  • He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the LORD’s coming!
    Clear the road for him!’c
  • John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
  • This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
  • And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
  • All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
  • And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
  • His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
  • And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
  • John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am — so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals.
  • I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
  • I baptize you withd water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”
  • The Baptism of Jesus

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

  • The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River.
  • And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
  • As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on hime like a dove.
  • And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
  • And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
  • The Temptation of Jesus

And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
  • The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness,
  • And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.
  • where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.
  • Jesus Preaches in Galilee

Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
  • Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News.f
  • And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
  • “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
  • Jesus Calls His First Disciples

Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

  • The First Disciples

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simong and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.
  • And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
  • Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
  • And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
  • And they left their nets at once and followed him.
  • And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
  • A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets.
  • And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
  • He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men.
  • Jesus Expels an Evil Spirit

And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

  • Jesus Casts Out an Evil Spirit

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach.
  • And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
  • The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority — quite unlike the teachers of religious law.
  • And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
  • Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evilh spirit cried out,
  • Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
  • “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
  • And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
  • But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered.
  • And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
  • At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.
  • And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
  • Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!”
  • And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
  • The news about Jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of Galilee.
  • Jesus Heals at Peter's House

And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

  • Jesus Heals Many People

After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home.
  • But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
  • Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away.
  • And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
  • So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand, and helped her sit up. Then the fever left her, and she prepared a meal for them.
  • And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
  • That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus.
  • And all the city was gathered together at the door.
  • The whole town gathered at the door to watch.
  • And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.
  • So Jesus healed many people who were sick with various diseases, and he cast out many demons. But because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to speak.
  • Jesus Prays and Preaches

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

  • Jesus Preaches in Galilee

Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.
  • And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.
  • Later Simon and the others went out to find him.
  • And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
  • When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
  • And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.
  • But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.”
  • And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.
  • So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.
  • The Leper's Prayer

And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

  • Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy

A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said.
  • And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
  • Moved with compassion,i Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!”
  • And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
  • Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed.
  • And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
  • Then Jesus sent him on his way with a stern warning:
  • And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
  • “Don’t tell anyone about this. Instead, go to the priest and let him examine you. Take along the offering required in the law of Moses for those who have been healed of leprosy.j This will be a public testimony that you have been cleansed.”
  • But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
  • But the man went and spread the word, proclaiming to everyone what had happened. As a result, large crowds soon surrounded Jesus, and he couldn’t publicly enter a town anywhere. He had to stay out in the secluded places, but people from everywhere kept coming to him.
