Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

І сталось, що Він у суботу ввійшов був до дому одно́го з фарисейських старши́н, щоб хліба спожити, а вони назира́ли за Ним.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

2

І ото перед Ним був один чоловік, слабий на водя́нку.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

3

Ісус же озвався й сказав до зако́нників та фарисеїв: „Чи вздоровляти в суботу годи́ться чи ні?“

4

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

4

Вони ж мовчали. А Він, доторкну́вшись, уздоровив його та відпустив.

5

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

5

І сказав Він до них: „Коли осел або віл котро́гось із вас упаде́ до крини́ці, то хіба він не витягне зараз його дня суботнього?“

And they could not answer him again to these things.

І вони не могли відповісти на це.

The Parable of the Guests

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

А як Він спостері́г, як вони собі перші місця вибирали, то сказав до запро́шених притчу:

8

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

8

„Коли́ хто покличе тебе на весі́лля, не сідай на першому місці, щоб не трапився хто поважні́ший за тебе з покли́каних,

9

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

9

і щоб той, хто покликав тебе та його, не прийшов і тобі не сказав: „Поступи́ся цьому місцем!“ І тоді ти із соромом станеш займати місце останнє.

10

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Але як ти будеш запро́шений, то приходь, і сідай на останньому місці, щоб той, хто покликав тебе, підійшов і сказав тобі: „При́ятелю, — сідай вище!“ Тоді буде честь тобі перед покли́каними з тобою.

11

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

11

Хто́ бо підно́ситься — буде впоко́рений, а хто впокоря́ється — той піднесе́ться“.

12

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

А тому́, хто Його був покликав, сказав Він: „Коли ти справляєш обід чи вече́рю, не клич дру́зів своїх, ні братів своїх, ані своїх ро́дичів, ні сусідів багатих, щоб так само й вони коли не запросили тебе, — і буде взає́мна ві́дплата тобі.

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

Але, як справляєш гости́ну, клич убогих, калік, кривих та сліпих,

14

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

14

і бу́деш блаженний, бо не мають вони чим віддати тобі, — віддасться ж тобі за воскресі́ння праведних!“

15

The Parable of the Banquet

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

15

Як почув це один із отих, що сиділи з Ним при столі, то до Нього сказав: „Блаженний, хто хліб споживатиме в Божому Царстві!“

16

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

16

Він же промовив до нього: „Один чоловік споряди́в був велику вече́рю, і запросив багатьох.

17

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

17

І послав він свого раба ча́су вече́рі сказати запро́шеним: „Ідіть, бо вже все нагото́вано“.

18

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

18

І зараз усі почали́ відмовлятися. Перший сказав йому: „Поле купив я, і маю потребу піти та оглянути його. Прошу́ тебе, — вибач мені!“

19

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

19

А другий сказав: „Я купив собі п'ять пар волів, — і йду спро́бувати їх. Прошу́ тебе, — вибач мені!“

20

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

20

І знов інший сказав: „Одружився ось я, і через те я не мо́жу прибути“.

21

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

21

І вернувся той раб і па́нові своєму про все розпо́вів. Розгнівавсь госпо́дар тоді, та й сказав до свого раба: „Піди швидко на вулиці та на завулки міські́, і приведи́ сюди вбогих, і калік, і сліпих, і кривих“.

22

And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

22

І згодом раб повідо́мив: „Пане, сталося так, як звелів ти, та мі́сця є ще“.

23

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

23

І сказав пан рабові: „Піди на дороги й на за́городи, та й си́луй прийти, щоб напо́внився дім мій.

24

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

24

Кажу́ бо я вам, що жоден із запрошених му́жів тих не покушту́є моєї вечері. Бо багато покли́каних, та ви́браних мало!“

25

The Cost of Following Jesus

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

25

Ішло ж з Ним багато людей. І, звернувшись, сказав Він до них:

26

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

26

„Коли хто прихо́дить до Мене, і не знена́видить свого батька та матері, і дружи́ни й дітей, і братів і сесте́р, а до того й своє́ї душі́, — той не може буть учнем Моїм!

27

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

27

І хто свого хреста не несе, і не йде вслід за Мною, — той не може бути учнем Моїм!

28

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

28

Хто бо з вас, коли башту поставити хоче, перше не сяде й вида́тків не ви́рахує, — чи має потрібне на ви́конання,

29

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

29

щоб, коли покладе він основу, але докінчи́ти не зможе, усі, хто побачить, не стали б сміятися з нього,

30

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

30

говорячи: „Чоловік цей почав будувати, але докінчи́ти не міг“.

31

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

31

Або який цар, ідучи́ на війну супроти царя іншого, перше не сяде порадитися, чи спромо́жен він із десятьма́ тисячами стріти того, хто йде з двадцятьма́ тисячами проти нього?

32

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

Коли ж ні, то, як той ще дале́ко, шле посольство до нього та й просить про мир.

33

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

33

Так ото й кожен із вас, який не зречеться усьо́го, що має, не може бути учнем Моїм.

Good Salt

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

34

Сіль — добра річ. Коли ж сіль несолоною стане, чим приправити її?

35

It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

35

Ні на землю, ні на гній не потрібна вона, — її геть викидають. Хто має ву́ха, щоб слухати, — нехай слу́хає!“
