Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

І сталося, що коли в суботу Ісус увійшов у дім якогось начальника з фарисеїв, щоб їсти хліб, то вони стежили за Ним.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

2

І ось, перед Ним був один чоловік, хворий на водянку.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

3

Озвавшись, Ісус сказав до законників і фарисеїв: У суботу годиться оздоровляти чи ні?

4

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

4

Вони ж мовчали. А Він, доторкнувшись, оздоровив його й відпустив.

5

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

5

І сказав Він їм: Коли в когось із вас син або віл упаде в криницю, хіба не витягнете відразу ж — у день суботній?

And they could not answer him again to these things.

Та вони не могли дати відповіді на це.

The Parable of the Guests

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

А як Він помітив, що вони вибирали собі перші місця, розповів запрошеним притчу, кажучи їм:

8

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

8

Коли хто запросить тебе на весілля, не сідай на перше місце, аби часом хтось поважніший від тебе не виявився між запрошеними,

9

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

9

і щоб той, хто тебе та його запросив, не прийшов і не сказав тобі: Поступися йому місцем. І тоді, засоромлений, станеш займати останнє місце.

10

But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

Але коли будеш запрошений, прийди, сядь на останнє місце, щоб той, хто запросив тебе, підійшов і сказав тобі: Друже, сядь вище! Тоді буде тобі честь перед усіма запрошеними з тобою.

11

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Бо кожний, хто підноситься, буде понижений, а хто понижується, буде піднесений!

12

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

Говорив же Він і до того, хто запросив Його: Коли ти справляєш обід або вечерю, не запрошуй своїх друзів, ані своїх братів, ані своїх родичів, ані багатих сусідів, щоб і вони тебе колись запросили, — і в цьому буде тобі винагорода.

13

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

Але коли влаштовуєш гостину, клич бідних, слабких, кривих, сліпих, —

14

And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

і будеш блаженний, бо не мають чим тобі віддати; віддасться ж тобі у воскресінні праведних!

15

The Parable of the Banquet

And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

15

Почувши це, один з тих, які сиділи при столі, сказав Йому: Блаженний той, хто їстиме хліб у Божому Царстві!

16

Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

16

Він же сказав йому: Один чоловік справляв велику гостину і запросив багатьох;

17

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

17

і послав свого раба в час гостини, щоби сказав запрошеним: Ідіть, бо вже [все] готове!

18

And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

18

І враз усі почали відмовлятися. Перший сказав йому: Поле купив я, потрібно мені піти й побачити його; благаю тебе, вважай мене за виправданого.

19

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

19

А другий сказав: Купив я п’ять пар волів і йду випробувати їх; благаю тебе, вважай мене за виправданого.

20

And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

20

Ще один сказав: Я одружився і через те не можу прийти.

21

So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

21

Повернувся раб і розповів це своєму панові. Тоді пан, розгнівавшись, сказав своєму рабові: Мерщій виходь на площі та вулиці міста і приведи сюди вбогих, калік, сліпих, кривих!

22

And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

22

І сказав раб: Пане, сталося так, як наказав ти, і ще є місця.

23

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

23

Та пан рабові сказав: Вийди на шляхи, на загороди і змушуй увійти, щоб наповнився мій дім.

24

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

24

Кажу вам, що жодний з тих раніше запрошених мужів не скуштує Моєї вечері. [Бо багато покликаних, та мало вибраних].

25

The Cost of Following Jesus

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

Ішло за Ним багато людей. Обернувшись, Він сказав їм:

26

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

26

Якщо хто приходить до Мене і не зненавидить свого батька та матері, дружини й дітей, братів і сестер, та ще й душу свою, той не може бути Моїм учнем.

27

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

27

Хто не несе свого хреста і не йде слідом за Мною, не може бути Моїм учнем.

28

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

28

Бо хто з вас, бажаючи збудувати вежу, спочатку не сяде й не полічить коштів, чи вистачить для завершення,

29

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

29

щоб, коли покладе основу й не зможе докінчити, усі, які побачать, не почали сміятися з нього,

30

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

30

кажучи, що цей чоловік почав будувати й не спромігся закінчити.

31

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

31

Або який цар, ідучи на бій проти іншого царя, спершу не сяде порадитися, чи під силу йому з десятьма тисячами війська зустріти того, хто йде з двадцятьма тисячами проти нього?

32

Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

Коли ні, то як той ще далеко, шле до нього посланців і просить примирення.

33

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

33

Так ото й кожний з вас, хто не відречеться від усього свого майна, не може бути Моїм учнем.

Good Salt

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

Отже, сіль — добра річ, але коли сіль звітріє, чим посолите?

35

It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

35

Ні на землю, ні на добриво вона не придатна — її висипають геть. Хто має вуха, щоб слухати, нехай слухає!
