The Dispute over Circumcision

And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

А дехто, що з Юдеї прийшли, навчали братів: „Якщо ви не обріжетеся за звича́єм Мойсеєвим, то спастися не можете“.

2

When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

Коли ж суперечка повстала й чимале змага́ння в Павла́ та в Варнави з ними, то постановили, щоб Павло́ та Варнава, та дехто ще інший із них, пішли в справі цій до апо́столів й старших у Єрусалим.

And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

Тож вони, відпроваджені Церквою, ішли через Фінікі́ю та Самарі́ю, розповідаючи про поганське наве́рнення, і радість велику чинили всім браттям.

And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.

Коли ж в Єрусалим прибули́ вони, були прийняті Церквою, та апо́столами, та старши́ми, і вони розповіли́, як багато вчинив Бог із ними.

The Council at Jerusalem

But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

Але дехто, що вві́рували з фарисейської партії, устали й сказали, що потрібно поганів обрі́зувати й наказати, щоб Зако́на Мойсеєвого берегли.

And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.

6

І зібрались апо́столи й старші, щоб розглянути справу оцю.

7

And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

Як велике ж змага́ння повстало, Петро встав і промовив до них: „Мужі-браття, ви знаєте, що з давнішніх днів вибрав Бог поміж нами мене́, щоб погани почули слово Єва́нгелії через у́ста мої, та й увірували.

8

And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

8

І засві́дчив їм Бог Серцезнавець, давши їм Духа Святого, як і нам,

9

And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

9

і між нами та ними різни́ці Він жодної не вчинив, очистивши вірою їхні серця.

10

Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

10

Отож, чого Бога тепер споку́шуєте, щоб учням на шию покласти ярмо́, якого ані наші отці, ані ми не здола́ли поне́сти?

11

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

11

Та ми віруємо, що спасе́мося благода́ттю Господа Ісуса так само, як і вони“.

12

Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

І вся громада замовкла, і слухали пильно Варнаву й Павла, що розповідали, які то знаме́на та чу́да вчинив через них Бог між поганами!

13

And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:

13

Як замовкли ж вони, то Яків озвався й промовив: „Мужі-браття, послухайте також мене.

14

Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

14

Си́мон ось розповів, як зглянувся Бог від поча́тку, щоб вибрати люд із поганів для Йме́ння Свого.

15

And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

15

І пророчі слова́ з цим погоджуються, як написано:

16

After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

16

„Пото́му вернуся, і відбуду́ю Давидову ски́нію занепалу, і відбудую руїни її, і наново поставлю її,

17

That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

17

щоб шукали Господа люди зосталі та всі наро́ди, над якими Ім'я́ Моє кликано, — говорить Господь, що чинить це все!

18

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

18

Господе́ві відвіку відо́мі всі вчинки Його“.

19

Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

19

Тому ду́маю я, щоб не турбувати поган, що до Бога наверта́ються,

20

But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

20

але написати до них, щоб стри́мувались від занечи́щення і́дольського, та від блу́ду, і задушени́ни, і від кро́ви.

21

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

21

Бо своїх проповідників має Мойсей по містах здавенда́вна, і щосуботи читають його в синагогах“.

The Letter to the Gentile Believers

Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

Тоді постановили апо́столи й старші з ці́лою Церквою вибрати му́жів із них, і послати до Антіохі́ї з Павло́м та Варна́вою Юду, що зветься Варса́вва, і Силу, му́жів проводирів між братами,

23

And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:

написавши свої́ми руками оце́: „Апостоли й старші брати до братів, що з поган в Антіохі́ї, і Си́рії, і Кілікі́ї: Вітаємо вас!

24

Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

Через те, що ми чули, що деякі з вас, яким ми того не дору́чували, стурбували наукою вас, і захитали вам душі,

25

It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

25

то ми постановили однодушно, зібравшися, щоб о́браних мужів послати до вас із коханими нашими — Варнавою та Павло́м,

26

Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

26

людьми́ тими, що ду́ші свої віддали́ за Ім'я́ Господа нашого Ісуса Христа.

27

We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

27

Тож ми Юду та Силу послали, що вияснять усно те саме.

28

For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

28

Бо зво́лилось Духові Святому і нам, — тягару́ вже нія́кого не наклада́ти на вас, окрім цього необхідного:

29

That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

29

стри́муватися від ідольських жертов та крови, і задушени́ни, та від блу́ду. Оберегаючися від того, ви зробите добре. Бувайте здорові!“

The Believers at Antioch Rejoice

So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:

Посланці́ ж прийшли в Антіохі́ю, і, зібравши наро́д, доручили листа.

31

Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

31

А перечитавши, раділи з поті́шення того.

32

And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

32

А Юда та Сила, самі бувши пророками, частим словом підбадьо́рували та зміцняли братів.

33

And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.

33

А як перебули́ вони там якийсь час, то брати їх відпустили з миром до тих, хто їх вислав.

34

Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.

34

Але Сила схотів лиши́тися там, а Юда вернувся до Єрусалиму.

35

Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

35

А Павло з Варнавою в Антіохії жили́, навчаючи та благові́стячи ра́зом із іншими багатьома́ Слово Господнє.

Paul's Second Missionary Journey

And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

А по декількох днях промовив Павло́ до Варнави: „Ходімо знов, і відвідаймо наших братів у кожному місті, де ми провіщали Слово Господнє, — як вони пробува́ють“.

37

And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

37

А Варнава хотів був узяти з собою Івана, що зва́ний був Ма́рком.

38

But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

38

Та Павло́ вважав за потрібне не брати з собою того, хто від них відлучився з Памфілії, та з ними на працю не йшов.

39

And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

39

І повстала незгода, і розлучились вони між собою. Тож Варнава взяв Ма́рка, і попли́нув до Кіпру.

40

And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

40

А Павло вибрав Силу й пішов, Божій благода́ті братами доручений.

41

And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

41

І проходив він Си́рію та Кілікі́ю, Церкви́ зміцнюючи.
