The Holy Spirit Received at Ephesus

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

І сталося, що коли Аполло́с перебував у Кори́нті, то Павло, перейшовши горі́шні країни, прибув до Ефе́су, і деяких учнів знайшов,

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

та й спитав їх: „Чи ви Духа Святого одержали, як увірували?“ А вони відказали йому: „Та ми навіть не чули, чи є Дух Святий!“

3

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

3

І він запитав: „Тож у що́ ви христились?“ Вони ж відказали: В Іванове хрищення“.

4

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

4

І промовив Павло: „Таж Іван христив хрищенням на покая́ння, говорячи лю́дям, щоб вірили в Того, Хто при́йде по ньому, цебто в Ісуса“.

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

5

Як почули ж ́, то христились вони в Ім'я́ Господа Ісуса.

6

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

6

А коли Павло руки на них покла́в, то зійшов на них Дух Святий, — і різними мовами стали вони промовляти та пророкувати!

7

And all the men were about twelve.

7

А всіх їх було́ чоловіка з двана́дцять.

Paul Ministers in Ephesus

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

8

А до синагоги ввійшовши, промовляв він відважно, три місяці про Боже Царство навчаючи та переконуючи.

9

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

А коли опиралися дехто й не вірували, і дорогу Господню лихосло́вили перед наро́дом, то він їх покинув і виділив учнів, і щодня проповідував у школі одно́го Тира́на.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

Це ж два роки продовжувалось, так що всі, хто замешкував в Азії, юдеї та ге́ллени, слухали слово про Господа.

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

І Бог чуда чинив надзвича́йні руками Павловими,

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

12

так що навіть хустки́ й пояси́ з його тіла прино́сили хворим, — і хвороби їх кидали, і ду́хи лукаві вихо́дили з них.

13

The Sons of Sceva

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Дехто ж із мандрівни́х ворожби́тів юдейських зачали́ закликати Ім'я́ Господа Ісуса над тими, хто мав злих духів, проказуючи: Заклинаємо вас Ісусом, Якого Павло́ проповідує!“

14

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

14

Це ж робили якісь сім синів юдейського первосвященика Ске́ви.

15

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

15

Відповів же злий дух і сказав їм: „Я знаю Ісуса, і знаю Павла, а ви хто такі?“

16

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

16

І ско́чив на них чоловік, що в ньому злий дух був, і, перемігші обох, поду́жав їх так, що втекли вони з дому нагі́ та пора́нені.

17

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

І це стало відо́ме юдеям та ге́лленам, усім, що в Ефесі замешкують, — і о́страх напав на всіх їх, і сла́вилося Ім'я́ Господа Ісуса.

18

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

18

І багато-хто з тих, що ввірували, прихо́дили, визнаваючи та відкриваючи вчинки свої.

19

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

19

І багато-хто з тих, що займалися ча́рами, позно́сили книги свої та й перед усіма́ попалили. І злічили ціну́ їх, і вийшло на срібло п'ятдесят тисяч драхм.

20

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

20

Так могуче росло та зміцнялося Вожеє Слово!

21

The Riot in Ephesus

After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

А як спо́внилось це, Павло в Дусі задумав перейти Македо́нію та Ахаю, та й удатись у Єрусалим, говорячи: „Як побу́ду я там, то треба мені й Рим побачити“.

22

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

22

Тож він послав у Македо́нію двох із тих, що служили йому, Тимофі́я й Ера́ста, а сам позостався якийсь час ув Азії.

23

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

23

І ро́зрух чималий був стався там ча́су того за Господню дорогу.

24

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

24

Бо один золота́р, Дмитро на ім'я́, що робив срібляні́ Артемі́дині храмки, та ремісникам заробі́ток чималий давав,

25

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

25

згромадив він їх і ще інших подібних робі́тників, та й промовив: „Ви знаєте, мужі, що з цього ремесла́ заробі́ток ми маємо.

26

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

26

І ви бачите й чуєте, що не тільки в Ефе́сі, але мало не в усій Азії — цей Павло збаламу́тив і відвернув багате́нно наро́ду, говорячи, ніби то не боги, що руками поро́блені.

27

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

27

І не тільки оце нам загрожує, що при́йде зайняття в упадок, а й храм богині великої Артемі́ди в ніщо́ зарахується, і буде зруйнована й ве́лич тієї, що шанує її ціла Азія та цілий світ“.

28

And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Почувши ж оце, вони перепо́внились гнівом, та й стали кричати, говорячи: „Артемі́да ефе́ська велика!“

29

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

29

І місто напо́внилось за́колотом. І кинулися однодушно до видо́вища, схопи́вши Павло́вих супу́тників — Гая та Ариста́рха, македо́нян.

30

And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

30

Як Павло ж хотів у наро́д увійти, то учні його не пустили.

31

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

31

Також дехто з азі́йських начальників, що були йому при́ятелі, послали до нього й просили, щоб він не вдава́всь на видо́вище.

32

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

32

І кожен що інше кричав, бо збори бурхли́ві були, і багате́нно з них навіть не знали, чого ради зібралися.

33

And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

33

А з наро́ду взяли Олександра, бо юдеї його висували. І Олекса́ндер дав знака рукою, і хотів ви́правдатися перед наро́дом.

34

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

34

А коли розпізнали, що юде́янин він, то злилися всі в один голос, і годин зо дві гукали: „Артеміда ефеська велика!“

35

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

А як писар міськи́й заспоко́їв наро́д, то промовив: „Мужі ефеські, яка ж то люди́на не знає, що місто Ефес — то храмо́вий догля́дач Артеміди великої й її образу, упалого з неба?

36

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

36

Коли ж цьому перечити не можна, то потрібно вам бути спокійними, і не роби́ти необачно нічо́го.

37

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

37

А ви ж привели́ цих людей, що ані святокрадці, ані вашої богині не знева́жили.

38

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

38

Отож, як Дмитро та його ремісники мають справу на ко́го, то суди є на ринку й проконсули, — один о́дного хай позивають.

39

But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

39

А коли чогось іншого допомина́єтеся, то те вирішиться на зако́ннім зібра́нні.

40

For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

40

Бо ось є небезпека, що нас за сьогоднішній ро́зрух оскаржити можуть, і немає жа́дної причини, якою могли б виправдати це зборище“. І, промовивши це, розпустив він громаду.
