Stephen Addresses the Sanhedrin
Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
А він промовив: Мужі, брати і батьки, послухайте! Бог слави з’явився нашому батькові Авраамові, коли він був у Месопотамії перед тим, як він оселився в Харані.
And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
І сказав йому: Вийди зі своєї землі, від свого роду та піди в край, який Я тобі покажу.
Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
Тоді він вийшов з Халдейської землі й оселився в Харані. А звідти, після смерті його батька, Бог переселив його в цю землю, де ви тепер живете.
And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
І не дав йому спадщини в ній навіть на стопу ноги, але обіцяв дати її для володіння йому та його нащадкам після нього, хоч не було в нього дитини.
And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
І сказав йому Бог, що нащадки його будуть переселенцями в чужій землі, будуть поневолені й гнобитимуть їх чотириста років.
And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
Але Я, — сказав Бог, — судитиму народ, якому вони служитимуть, і після цього вийдуть і будуть служити Мені на цьому місці!
And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
І дав йому завіт обрізання. І він породив Ісаака й обрізав його восьмого дня, Ісаак — Якова, Яків — дванадцятьох патріархів.
And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
А патріархи позаздрили Йосифові й продали його в Єгипет. Та з ним був Бог
And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
і визволив його від усіх утисків, дав йому мудрість і милість перед фараоном, царем єгипетським, і поставив його правителем над Єгиптом і над усім своїм домом.
Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
Настав же голод по всій [землі] Єгипетській та Ханаанській, і прийшла велика скрута, — наші батьки не знаходили поживи.
But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
Почувши, що в Єгипті є пшениця, Яків послав спочатку наших батьків.
And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
Коли ж вони прибули вдруге, Йосиф признався своїм братам, і рід Йосифа став відомим фараонові.
Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
Йосиф послав покликати свого батька Якова з усім родом, — сімдесят п’ять [1] душ.
So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,
Тож Яків переселився в Єгипет, де помер сам і батьки наші;
And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
і перенесли їх до Сихема й поклали до гробниці, яку Авраам купив за срібло в синів Емора в Сихемі.
But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
Коли наближався час виконання обітниці, яку Бог проголосив Авраамові, народ в Єгипті збільшився і помножився,
Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
доки не постав у Єгипті інший цар, який не знав Йосипа.
The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
Він, замисливши зло проти нашого роду, гнобив наших батьків, примушуючи їх викидати своїх немовлят, аби не давати їм жити.
In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:
У цей час народився Мойсей, і був він гарний перед Богом; його годували три місяці в батьківському домі.
And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
Коли ж його покинули, то дочка фараона взяла його й вигодувала собі за сина.
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
І Мойсей був навчений усієї єгипетської мудрості, був сильний у своїх ділах та словах.
And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
А коли сповнилося йому сорок років, прийшло йому на серце відвідати своїх братів — синів Ізраїля.
And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
Побачивши, як кривдили одного з них, допоміг і, убивши єгиптянина, помстився за покривдженого.
For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
Він думав, що його брати зрозуміють, що це Бог його рукою дає їм спасіння. Та вони не зрозуміли.
And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
Наступного дня з’явився перед ними, коли вони билися, і намагався їх помирити, сказавши: Мужі, та ви ж брати, навіщо кривдите один одного?
But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
А той, який кривдив ближнього, відштовхнув його, сказавши: Хто тебе поставив старшим і суддею над нами?
Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
Чи ти хочеш мене вбити так само, як учора вбив єгиптянина?
Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
Через цю справу Мойсей утік і став чужинцем у Мадіямській землі, де породив двох синів.
And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
Коли минуло сорок років, з’явився йому в пустелі при Сінайській горі ангел [Господній] у вогняному полум’ї куща.
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
Побачивши це, Мойсей дивувався з видіння. А коли він підійшов, щоб роздивитися, то пролунав голос Господа:
Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
Я, Бог твоїх батьків, Бог Авраама й Ісаака та [Бог] Якова! Охоплений трепетом, Мойсей не наважився поглянути.
Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
Та Господь сказав йому: Зніми взуття зі своїх ніг, бо місце, на якому стоїш, — це свята земля!
I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
Я поглянув і побачив гноблення Мого народу, який у Єгипті, Я почув їхній стогін, тож зійшов визволити їх. А тепер іди, Я посилаю тебе до Єгипту!
This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
Цього Мойсея, якого відкинули, сказавши: Хто тебе поставив старшим і суддею? — його, з’явившись у кущі, Бог рукою ангела послав як старшого й визволителя.
He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
Саме він вивів їх, зробивши чудеса й ознаки в Єгипетській землі та на Червоному морі й упродовж сорока років у пустелі.
This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
Це той Мойсей, який сказав синам ізраїльським: Пророка поставить вам Бог з ваших братів, як мене, [Його слухайте]!
This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
Це той, хто в пустелі на зібранні був разом з Ангелом, який на Сінайській горі говорив до нього та до наших батьків, хто одержав живі слова, щоби дати нам;
To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
якого не схотіли послухатися наші батьки, але відкинули його й повернулися своїми серцями до Єгипту,
Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
сказавши Ааронові: Зроби нам богів, які йтимуть перед нами, бо не знаємо, що сталося з цим Мойсеєм, який вивів нас із Єгипетської землі!
And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
І тими днями вони зробили теля, принесли жертву ідолові й веселилися з витвору своїх рук.
Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
Тож Бог відвернувся і передав їх служити небесному війську, як написано в книзі Пророків: Доме Ізраїля, чи приносили ви Мені сорок років у пустелі заколення і жертви?
Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
Ви ж підняли намет Молоха і зірку вашого бога Райфана — зображення, які самі зробили, щоби поклонятися їм! Я переселю вас аж за Вавилон!
Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
Наші батьки мали в пустелі намет свідчення, як наказав Той, Хто велів Мойсеєві зробити його за зразком, який він бачив.
Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
Узявши його, батьки наші занесли його разом з Ісусом у землю тих народів, які вигнав Бог з-перед обличчя наших батьків, — і так аж до днів Давида,
Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
який знайшов благодать у Бога і просив, щоби знайти дім для Бога Якова.
Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
Але Всевишній проживає не в рукотворному, як каже пророк:
Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
Небо — Мій престол, а земля — підніжжя для Моїх ніг. Який дім збудуєте Мені, — каже Господь, — або яке місце для Мого спочинку?
Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
Ви, твердошиї, з необрізаними серцями й вухами! Ви завжди противитеся Святому Духові, — як батьки ваші, так і ви!
Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
Кого з пророків не переслідували ваші батьки? І повбивали тих, які наперед провіщали про прихід Праведника, Якого ви тепер зрадили й убили.
Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
Ви, котрі одержали Закон через веління ангелів, але не зберегли його!
The Stoning of Stephen
When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

Слухаючи це, вони палали гнівом у своїх серцях і скреготали на нього зубами.
But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
Але Степан, сповнений Святого Духа, поглянув на небо, побачив славу Божу й Ісуса, Який стояв праворуч Бога,
And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
і сказав: Ось я бачу відкриті небеса й Сина Людського, Який стоїть праворуч Бога!
Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
Голосно закричавши й затуливши свої вуха, вони одностайно накинулися на нього.
And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.
І, вивівши за місто, вони почали побивати його камінням. А свідки поклали свій одяг біля ніг юнака, якого звали Савлом.
And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
І побивали камінням Степана, а він молився і казав: Господи Ісусе, прийми дух мій!
