A Warning against Favoritism

My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

1

Брати мої, не зважайте на особу, майте віру в нашого Господа слави — Ісуса Христа!

For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

Адже коли до вашого зібрання ввійде чоловік із золотим перснем, у блискучих шатах, та ввійде бідний у вбогому одязі,

3

And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

а ви поглянете на того, хто в шатах блискучих, і скажете: Ти сядь отут зручно, а бідному скажете: Ти стань отам або сядь тут на моєму підніжку, —

Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

то хіба не вчинили ви поділ між собою, хіба не стали суддями з лихими задумами?

5

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Слухайте, любі брати мої: хіба не обрав Бог бідних світу як багатих вірою і спадкоємців Царства, яке пообіцяв тим, хто любить Його?

6

But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

А ви зневажили бідного. Хіба не багаті гнітять вас, і хіба не вони тягнуть вас на суди?

7

Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

Хіба не вони ганьблять добре ім’я, яким вас названо?

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Отже, коли ви виконуєте царський Закон згідно з написаним: Люби свого ближнього, як самого себе, — добре робите.

But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

Коли ж зважаєте на особу, то чините гріх: Закон звинувачує вас як порушників.

10

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Адже хто весь Закон виконує, а згрішить в одному, той став винним у всьому,

For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

бо Хто сказав: Не чини перелюбу, — Той і сказав: Не вбивай! Коли ж не чиниш перелюбу, а вбиваєш, ти став порушником Закону.

12

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

12

Так говоріть і так робіть, як ті, хто має бути суджений Законом свободи.

13

For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Тому що суд без милосердя на того, хто не чинив милосердя. Милосердя ставиться вище суду.

Faith and Works

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Яка користь, брати мої, коли хтось каже, що віру має, а діл не має? Чи віра може його спасти?

15

If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

Коли брат або сестра будуть голі й позбавлені щоденної їжі,

16

And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

16

а хтось із вас їм скаже: Ідіть з миром, грійтеся та їжте, але не дасть їм потрібного для тіла, яка з цього користь?

17

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

17

Так і віра, коли не має діл, сама по собі є мертвою.

18

Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

18

Але хтось скаже: Ти маєш віру, а я маю діла; покажи мені свою віру без діл, а я покажу тобі [свою] віру зі своїх діл.

19

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

19

Чи віриш ти, що один Бог? Добре робиш! Але й біси вірять і тремтять.

20

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

20

О, марна людино! Чи ж не хочеш зрозуміти, що віра без діл не дає плоду?

21

Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

21

Наш батько Авраам хіба не з діл оправдався, коли приніс свого сина Ісаака на жертовник?

22

Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

22

Хіба не бачиш, що віра діяла разом з його ділами, і віра стала досконалою через діла?

23

And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

23

І здійснилося Писання, що каже: Повірив Авраам Богові, і це зараховано йому за праведність, і був названий Божим другом!

24

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

24

Хіба не бачите, що людина оправдується ділами, а не самою вірою.

25

Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

25

Так само й блудниця Рахав хіба не з діл оправдалася, прийнявши розвідників і вивівши їх іншою дорогою?

26

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

26

Адже як тіло без духа мертве, так і віра без діл — мертва.
