The Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him:

1

Якщо на землі, якою Господь, твій Бог, дає тобі володіти, буде знайдений убитий, який упав у полі, і не знають, хто його вбив,

Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain:

то нехай старійшини та судді вийдуть і виміряють відстань до міст, що навколо вбитого,

3

And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke;

3

і нехай буде визначено місто, найближче до вбитого. І нехай старійшини того міста візьмуть ялівку з великої худоби, якою ще не працювали, і яка не носила ярма,

4

And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley:

і нехай старійшини того міста приведуть ту ялівку в дику долину, яка ще не була оброблювана, ані засіювана, і в тій долині переріжуть ялівці сухожилля.

And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried:

Тоді підійдуть священики-левіти, — адже їх Господь Бог обрав, щоб стояти перед Ним і благословляти Його Іменем, і за їхнім словом має бути вирішена кожна суперечка і кожна сутичка.

And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley:

І всі старійшини того міста, що найближче до вбитого, вмиють руки над головою ялівки, якій перерізано сухожилля в долині,

7

And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.

7

й, озвавшись, скажуть: Наші руки не пролили цієї крові, і наші очі не бачили, хто пролив.

Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them.

8

Будь милосердним до Свого народу, Ізраїлю, якого Ти, Господи, визволив, щоб не було пролиття невинної крові у Твоєму народі, Ізраїлі. І та кров буде їм викуплена.

9

So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD.

І ти усунеш невинну кров з вас самих, якщо чинитимеш те, що угодне та добре перед Господом, твоїм Богом.

10

Marrying a Captive Woman

When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them captive,

Якщо ж ти вийдеш на війну проти своїх ворогів, і Господь, твій Бог, видасть тобі їх у твої руки, і ти захопиш у них полонених,

11

And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife;

11

і побачиш серед полонених вродливу з вигляду жінку, уподобаєш її собі та візьмеш її собі за дружину,

12

Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;

12

то введеш її всередину у свій дім, обстрижеш її голову, обріжеш їй нігті,

13

And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.

13

здіймеш з неї її одяг полонянки, і нехай вона сидить у твоєму домі й оплакує батька та матір місяць часу, а після цього ввійдеш до неї та співжитимеш із нею, і вона буде твоєю дружиною.

14

And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.

І буде, — якщо ти більше не бажатимеш її, то відпустиш її на волю, але в жодному разі вона не може бути продана [1] за гроші. Не гордуй нею, бо ти упокорив її.

15

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:

Якщо ж у якогось чоловіка буде дві дружини, — одна кохана, а друга ненависна, — і як кохана, так і ненависна народять йому синів, і первородним буде син ненависної,

16

Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:

то нехай буде так, що того дня, коли він даватиме в спадщину синам своє майно, він не зможе надати первородство синові коханої, нехтуючи первородним сином ненависної,

17

But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

але визнає первородним сина ненависної, давши йому подвійно з усього, що в нього буде, бо він є першим з його дітей, і йому належить первородство.

18

A Rebellious Son

If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

Якщо ж у когось буде норовливий і бунтівливий син, який не слухатиметься голосу батька і голосу матері, і вони каратимуть його, та він не слухатиметься їх,

19

Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

19

то нехай його батько та його мати, взявши його, виведуть його до старійшин свого міста, до брами свого місця проживання,

20

And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

20

та скажуть мужам свого міста: Цей наш син норовиться і бунтує, не слухається нашого голосу, й, гуляючи, пиячить.

21

And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

21

І нехай мужі того міста поб’ють його камінням, і він помре. Так викорениш зло з-посеред вас самих, а інші, почувши це, будуть боятися.

22

Cursed is Anyone Hung on a Tree

And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:

22

Якщо ж на комусь буде гріх, і буде винесений смертний вирок, і він помре, і ви повісите його на дереві,

23

His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

то хай його тіло не залишається через ніч на дереві, але неодмінно поховайте [2] його того ж дня, бо кожний, хто висить на дереві, — проклятий Богом, — тож не оскверняйте землю, яку Господь, твій Бог, дає тобі в спадщину.
