King James Bible

New Living Translation

  • The Greatest Commandment

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
  • A Call for Wholehearted Commitment

“These are the commands, decrees, and regulations that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you. You must obey them in the land you are about to enter and occupy,
  • That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
  • and you and your children and grandchildren must fear the LORD your God as long as you live. If you obey all his decrees and commands, you will enjoy a long life.
  • Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
  • Listen closely, Israel, and be careful to obey. Then all will go well with you, and you will have many children in the land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
  • Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
  • “Listen, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone.a
  • And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
  • And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
  • And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
  • And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.
  • And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
  • Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.
  • And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
  • Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.
  • And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
  • Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
  • And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
  • “The LORD your God will soon bring you into the land he swore to give you when he made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build.
  • And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
  • The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you have eaten your fill in this land,
  • Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
  • be careful not to forget the LORD, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.
  • Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.
  • You must fear the LORD your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.
  • Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;
  • “You must not worship any of the gods of neighboring nations,
  • (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
  • for the LORD your God, who lives among you, is a jealous God. His anger will flare up against you, and he will wipe you from the face of the earth.
  • Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.
  • You must not test the LORD your God as you did when you complained at Massah.
  • Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.
  • You must diligently obey the commands of the LORD your God — all the laws and decrees he has given you.
  • And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,
  • Do what is right and good in the LORD’s sight, so all will go well with you. Then you will enter and occupy the good land that the LORD swore to give your ancestors.
  • To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.
  • You will drive out all the enemies living in the land, just as the LORD said you would.
  • Teach Your Children

And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?
  • “In the future your children will ask you, ‘What is the meaning of these laws, decrees, and regulations that the LORD our God has commanded us to obey?’
  • Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:
  • “Then you must tell them, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand.
  • And the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:
  • The LORD did miraculous signs and wonders before our eyes, dealing terrifying blows against Egypt and Pharaoh and all his people.
  • And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.
  • He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors.
  • And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.
  • And the LORD our God commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear him so he can continue to bless us and preserve our lives, as he has done to this day.
  • And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
  • For we will be counted as righteous when we obey all the commands the LORD our God has given us.’
