Released from the Law
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

Хіба ви не знаєте, брати, — а звертаюся я до тих, хто знає Закон, — що Закон має владу над людиною, доки вона живе?
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
Одружена жінка, доки живе її чоловік, пов’язана з ним законом; коли ж помре чоловік, вона звільняється від закону чоловіка.
So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
Тому, доки її чоловік живий, її вважатимуть перелюбницею, якщо стане дружиною іншого чоловіка. Коли ж помре чоловік, вона звільняється від Закону і не буде перелюбницею, якщо вийде заміж за іншого.
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
Тому, брати мої, і ви померли для Закону тілом Христа, аби належати іншому, — Тому, Хто встав із мертвих, щоб ми принесли плід Богові.
For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
Бо коли ми були в тілі, то гріховні пристрасті, які виявляються через Закон, діяли в наших членах, щоби приносити плід смерті.
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
Нині ж ми звільнилися від Закону, померли для того, що нас зв’язувало, щоб служити в оновленні духа, а не в стародавності букви.
God's Law is Holy
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

То що ж скажемо? [Хіба] Закон — то гріх? Зовсім ні! Але я пізнав гріх тільки через Закон. Я не знав би пожадливості, якби Закон не говорив: Не пожадай.
But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
Тож гріх, узявши привід від заповіді, викликав у мені всяку пожадливість, адже гріх без Закону — мертвий.
For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
Я жив колись без Закону, а як прийшла заповідь, гріх ожив,
And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
а я помер, тому заповідь, дана для життя, спричинила мені смерть.
For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
Бо гріх, що взяв привід через заповідь, звів мене й умертвив нею.
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Отже, Закон — святий, і заповідь — свята, праведна та добра.
Struggling with Sin
Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

Хіба те, що добре, спричинило мені смерть? Зовсім ні! Але гріх, щоб і виявитися гріхом, спричинив мені смерть через добро, аби гріх став надмірно грішним завдяки заповіді.
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Бо знаємо, що Закон є духовний, а я — тілесний, проданий гріхові.
For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
Адже я не розумію, що чиню: роблю не те, що хочу, а те, що ненавиджу.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Коли ж я роблю те, чого не хочу, то погоджуюся із Законом, що він добрий.
Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Бо тепер уже не я це виконую, але гріх, який живе в мені.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Адже знаю, що не живе в мені, тобто в моєму тілі, добро: бажання є в мені, але щоб виконувати це добро, того не [знаходжу].
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Тож не роблю те добре, яке хочу, але те недобре, якого не хочу, — те роблю.
Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Якщо ж я роблю те, чого не хочу, то вже не я це роблю, а той гріх, який живе в мені.
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
Отже, я відкриваю такий закон: коли я хочу робити добро, то зло налягає на мене.
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
За внутрішньою людиною я насолоджуюся Божим Законом,
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
та бачу інший закон у моїх членах, який воює із законом мого розуму й полонить мене законом гріха, що міститься в моїх членах.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Нещасна я людина! Хто визволить мене від цього тіла смерті?
