Warnings from Israel's Past

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

1

Не хо́чу я, браття, щоб ви не знали, що під хмарою всі отці наші були́, — і всі перейшли через море,

2

And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

2

і всі охристилися в хмарі та в морі в Мойсея,

3

And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

3

і всі їли ту саму пожи́ву духовну,

4

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

і пили́ всі той самий духовний напі́й, бо пили від духовної скелі, що йшла вслід за ними, а та скеля — був Христос!

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Але їх багатьох не вподо́бав був Бог, бо „понищив Він їх у пустині“.

Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

А це були при́клади нам, щоб ми пожадливі на зле не були́, як були пожадливі й вони.

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Не будьте також ідоля́нами, як деякі з них, як написано: „Люди сіли, щоб їсти та пити, і встали, щоб грати“.

Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

Не станьмо чинити блу́ду, як деякі з них блудоді́яли, — і полягло їх одно́го дня двадцять три тисячі.

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

Ані не нарікайте, як деякі з них нарікали, — і загинули від погуби́теля.

Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Усе це трапилось з ними, як при́клади, а написане нам на науку, бо за нашого ча́су кінець віку прийшов.

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Тому́ то, хто ду́має, ніби стоїть він, нехай стережеться, щоб не впасти!

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Досягла́ вас спроба не інша, тільки лю́дська; але вірний Бог, Який не попу́стить, щоб ви випробо́вувалися більше, ніж можете, але при спробі й поле́гшення дасть, щоб зне́сти могли ви її.

Flee from Idolatry

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

14

Тому, мої любі, утікайте від служі́ння ідолам.

15

I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

15

Кажу́, як розумним; судіть самі, що кажу́ я.

16

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

Чаша благослове́ння, яку благословляємо, — чи не спільно́та то крови Христової? Хліб, який ломимо, чи не спільно́та він тіла Христового?

17

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

17

Тому́ що один хліб, тіло одне — нас багато, бо ми всі спільники хліба одного.

18

Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

Погляньте на Ізраїля за тілом: чи ж ті, що жертви їдять, не спільники́ вівтаря́?

19

What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

Тож що́ я кажу́? Що ідольська жертва є щось? Чи що ідол є щось?

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

20

Ні, але те, що в жертву приносять, „де́монам, а не Богові в жертву приносять“. Я ж не хо́чу, щоб ви спільника́ми для де́монів стали.

21

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

Бо не можете пити чаші Господньої та чаші де́монської; не можете бути спільника́ми Господнього сто́лу й столу де́монського.

22

Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

22

Чи ми дратува́тимем Господа? Хіба ми поту́жніші за Нього?

Do All to the God's Glory

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

23

Усе мені можна, — та не все на пожи́ток. Усе мені можна, — та буду́є не все!

24

Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

24

Нехай не шукає ніхто свого власного, але кожен — для ближнього!

25

Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

25

їжте все, що на я́тках м'ясних продається, за сумління зовсім не турбуючись, —

26

For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

26

Бо „Господня земля, і все, що на ній“!

27

If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

27

Як покличе вас хтось із невіруючих, і ви захочете піти́, — їжте все, що дадуть вам, за сумління зовсім не турбуючись.

28

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

Коли ж скаже вам хтось: „Це і́дольська жертва“, — не їжте тоді через того, хто сказав, та через сумління!

29

Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

Говорю́ ж не про власне сумління, але іншого, — чого б моя воля судилась сумлінням чужим?

30

For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

Коли я стаю спільником їжі з подякою, чому мене зневажають за те, за що́ дякую я?

31

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

31

Тож, коли ви їсте, чи коли ви п'єте́, або коли інше що робите, — усе на Божу славу робіть!

32

Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

32

Не робіть спокуси юдеям та ге́лленам, та Церкві Божій,

33

Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

33

як дого́джую й я всім у всьо́му, не шукаючи в тому пожи́тку свого́, але пожи́тку для багатьох, щоб спасли́ся вони.
