Jephthah Defeats Ephraim

And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.

І були скликані Єфре́мові люди, і перейшли на пі́вніч та й сказали до Їфта́ха: „Чому́ перейшов ти Йордан, щоб воювати з Аммоновими синами, а нас не покликав піти з собою? Ми спа́лимо огнем твій дім із тобою.

And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.

І сказав їм Їфта́х: „Велику боротьбу́ мав я та народ мій з Аммоновими синами. І кликав я вас, та ви не спасли мене з його руки.

And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

І коли я побачив, що ви не спасе́те, то поклав я ду́шу свою на небезпе́ку, і перейшов Йордан до Аммонових синів, а Господь дав їх у мою руку. І чого́ прийшли ви до мене цього дня, щоб воювати зо мною?“

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.

І зібрав Їфта́х усіх ґілеа́дських людей, та й воював з Єфремом. І побили ґілеадські люди Єфрема, бо ті сказали: „Ви Єфремові втікачі́, — Ґілеад поміж Єфремом та поміж Манасією“.

And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;

І зайняв Ґілеад йорда́нські перехо́ди до Єфрема. І сталося, коли говорили Єфремові втікачі: „Нехай я перейду́“, то ґілеадські люди йому говорили: „Чи ти єфремівець?“ Той казав: „Ні“.

Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.

І казали йому: „Скажи но шіббо́лет“. А той казав: „Сіббо́лет“, бо не міг ви́мовити так. І хапа́ли його, і різали при йорданськім перехо́ді. І впало того часу в Єфрема сорок і дві тисячі.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.

І судив Їфта́х Ізраїля шість років. І помер ґілеадянин Їфтах, і був похований у місті Ґілеаді.

Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon

And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

А по ньому Ізраїля судив Івцан з Віфлеє́му.

And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

І було в нього тридцять синів, а тридцять дочо́к він відпустив заміж назо́вні, і тридцять дочо́к впровадив для синів своїх з-назо́вні. І судив він Ізраїля сім літ.

Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Bethlehem.

І помер Івцан і був похований в Віфлеємі.

And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

А по ньому Ізраїля судив завуло́нівець Елон, і судив Ізраїля десять літ.

And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.

І помер завуло́нівець Елон, і був похований в Айялоні, у Завулоновім кра́ї.

And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.

А по ньому Ізраїля судив Авдо́н, син Гіллела, пір'атонянин.

And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.

І було в нього сорок синів та тридцять ону́ків, що їздили на семидесяти молодих ослах. І судив він Ізраїля вісім літ.

15

And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.

15

І помер Авдон, син Гіллела, пір'атонянин, і був похований в Єфремовім кра́ї, на горі амалике́янина.
