Saul's Overthrow and Death

Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

А филисти́мляни воювали з Ізраїлем. І побігли Ізраїлеві му́жі перед филисти́млянами, і падали трупами на горі Ґілбоа.

And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons.

І догнали филисти́мляни Саула та його синів. І повбивали филисти́мляни Йонатана й Авінадава та Малкі-Шуя, Саулових синів.

And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

І став бій тяжки́й для Саула, і його знайшли лу́чники, — він був дуже пора́нений тими лу́чниками.

Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

І сказав Саул до свого зброєно́ші: „Витягни меча свого, і пробий мене ним, щоб не прийшли ці необрі́зані, і не пробили мене, і не знуща́лися надо мною!“ Та не хотів зброєно́ша, бо дуже боявся. Тоді взяв Саул меча, — та й упав на нього!

And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

І побачив зброєноша, що помер Саул, і впав і він на свого меча, та й помер із ним.

So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.

І помер того дня Саул і троє синів його та зброєноша, також усі люди ра́зом.

The Philistines Possess the Towns

And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

А ізра́їльтяни, що мешкали на тім боці долини й на тім боці Йорда́ну, коли побачили, що повтікали ізра́їльтяни, і що померли Саул та сини його, поки́дали ті міста й повтікали, а филисти́мляни поприхо́дили й осілися в них.

And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

І сталося другого дня, і прийшли филисти́мляни, щоб пообдирати трупи, — та й знайшли Саула та трьох синів його, що лежали на горі Ґілбоа.

And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

І вони стяли йому го́лову, і поздира́ли збро́ю його, і послали в филистимські краї́ навко́ло, щоб сповістити в дома́х їхніх божкі́в та наро́дові.

And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

І вони поклали зброю його в домі Аста́рти, а тіло його прибили на мурі Бет-Шану.

Jabesh-Gilead's Tribute to Saul

And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;

І почули ме́шканці ґілеадського Явешу про те, що́ филисти́мляни зробили Саулові,

All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.

і встали всі хоробрі, і йшли всю ніч, і взяли́ Саулове тіло та тіла синів його з муру Бет-Шану, і прийшли до Явешу, та й спалили їх там.

And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

І взяли́ вони їхні кості, і поховали під тамари́ском в Явешу, та й по́стили сім день.
