Darby Bible Translation

  • The Offering of Isaac

Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
  • The Offering of Isaac

And it came to pass after these things, that God tried Abraham, and said to him, Abraham! and he said, Here am I.
  • He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”
  • And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son], whom thou lovest, Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and there offer him up for a burnt-offering on one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
  • So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
  • And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up and went to the place that God had told him of.
  • On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.
  • On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
  • Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”
  • And Abraham said to his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
  • Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.
  • And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and the knife, and they went both of them together.
  • Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
  • And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father! And he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the sheep for a burnt-offering?
  • Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.
  • And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself with the sheep for a burnt-offering. And they went both of them together.
  • Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
  • And they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built the altar there, and piled the wood; and he bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
  • Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
  • And Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to slaughter his son.
  • But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
  • The Sacrifice Averted

And the Angel of Jehovah called to him from the heavens, and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here am I.
  • He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
  • And he said, Stretch not out thy hand against the lad, neither do anything to him; for now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son], from me.
  • Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.
  • And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind was a ram caught in the thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt-offering instead of his son.
  • Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”
  • And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh; as it is said at the present day, On the mount of Jehovah will be provided.
  • Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,
  • And the Angel of Jehovah called to Abraham from the heavens a second time,
  • and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,
  • and said, By myself I swear, saith Jehovah, that, because thou hast done this, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son],
  • indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.
  • I will richly bless thee, and greatly multiply thy seed, as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is on the sea-shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
  • “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
  • and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because thou hast hearkened to my voice.
  • So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham lived at Beersheba.
  • And Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.
  • Now it came about after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor:
  • Nahor's Sons

And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she also has borne sons to thy brother Nahor:
  • Uz his firstborn and Buz his brother and Kemuel the father of Aram
  • Uz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
  • and Chesed and Hazo and Pildash and Jidlaph and Bethuel.”
  • and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
  • Bethuel became the father of Rebekah; these eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
  • (And Bethuel begot Rebecca.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
  • His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah and Gaham and Tahash and Maacah.
  • And his concubine, named Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maacah.
