Jacob’s Deception
Now it came about, when Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”

Сталося ж, коли Ісаак постарів і зір його ослаб, то покликав він свого старшого сина Ісава, та й сказав йому: Сину мій! А той відповів: Ось я.
Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death.
Він же промовив: Ось я зістарівся і не знаю дня моєї смерті.
“Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me;
Тому візьми тепер свою зброю, сагайдака та лука, і піди на рівнину, і вполюй мені дичини,
and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”
приготуй мені страву, яку я люблю, і принеси мені, щоб я попоїв, аби моя душа поблагословила тебе, перш ніж я помру.
Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home,
А Ревека почула, що говорив Ісаак своєму синові Ісаву. Тож пішов Ісав на рівнину вполювати дичину для свого батька,
Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying,
а Ревека сказала Якову, своєму молодшому синові: Слухай-но, я почула, як твій батько говорив твоєму братові Ісаву, кажучи:
‘Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.’
Принеси мені дичини і приготуй мені страву, щоби, попоївши, поблагословив я тебе перед Господом, перш ніж помру.
“Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you.
Тому послухай тепер мене, сину, що я тобі наказую.
“Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves.
Піди до отари, принеси мені звідти двоє молодих та гарних козенят, і я твоєму батькові приготую з них страву, яку він любить.
“Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”
Ти занесеш своєму батькові й він попоїсть, — аби поблагословив тебе твій батько, перше ніж помре.
Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man.
Та Яків сказав своїй матері Ревеці: Брат мій Ісав — волохатий чоловік, а я — чоловік гладкошкірий.
“Perhaps my father will feel me, then I will be as a deceiver in his sight, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.”
Ану ж, обмацає мене мій батько — і буду перед ним як той кепкун! Тож накличу на себе прокляття, а не благословення.
But his mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.”
А мати сказала йому: На мені твоє прокляття, сину; лише послухайся мого голосу та піди й принеси мені.
So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savory food such as his father loved.
Він, пішовши, взяв і приніс матері, а його мати приготувала страву, яку любив його батько.
Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.
Тоді Ревека, взявши гарний одяг свого старшого сина Ісава, котрий був у неї в хаті, одягнула свого молодшого сина Якова;
And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
козлячими шкурами вона обмотала його руки і гладку його шию,
She also gave the savory food and the bread, which she had made, to her son Jacob.
дала в руки свого сина Якова страву і хліб, що приготувала,
Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”
і той відніс своєму батькові, та й сказав: Батьку! Він же відізвався: Ось я. Хто ти, дитино?
Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that you may bless me.”
А Яків сказав батькові: Я Ісав, твій первенець! Я зробив так, як ти мені сказав; уставай, сядь і їж мою дичину, аби мене поблагословила твоя душа.
Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the LORD your God caused it to happen to me.”
Ісаак же сказав своєму синові: Як це ти так швидко знайшов, сину? Той же відповів: Те, що дав Господь, Бог твій, переді мною.
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.”
Тоді Ісаак сказав Якову: Підійди ближче до мене, сину, і я тебе обмацаю, — чи ти мій син Ісав, чи ні.
So Jacob came close to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
Тож Яків підійшов до свого батька Ісаака, і той обмацав його, та й сказав: Голос — це голос Якова, а руки — руки Ісава.
He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.
І не впізнав його, бо його руки були волохаті, як руки його брата Ісава; і поблагословив його.
And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.”
І запитав: Чи ти мій син Ісав? Той відповів: Я.
So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you.” And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank.
Принеси мені й попоїм твоєї дичини, сину, — промовив він, — щоб поблагословила тебе моя душа. І той приніс йому, і він попоїв; і приніс йому вина, і він випив.
Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.”
Тоді Ісаак, його батько, сказав йому: Підійди ближче до мене і поцілуй мене, сину.
So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he blessed him and said,
“See, the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field which the LORD has blessed;
“See, the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field which the LORD has blessed;
Тож наблизившись, він поцілував його, а той понюхав запах його одягу і поблагословив його, та й сказав: Ось запах мого сина — як запах багатого поля, котре Господь поблагословив.
Now may God give you of the dew of heaven,
And of the fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;
And of the fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;
І нехай дасть тобі Бог від небесної роси, і від багатства землі, і багато пшениці та вина.
May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
Be master of your brothers,
And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”
And nations bow down to you;
Be master of your brothers,
And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”
І хай тобі служать народи, і хай поклоняться тобі князі. Будь володарем над своїми братами, і тобі хай поклоняться сини твого батька. Хто проклинає тебе — проклятий; хто тебе благословляє — благословенний.
The Stolen Blessing
Now it came about, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had hardly gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
І сталося, коли закінчив Ісаак благословляти свого сина Якова, — це сталося, коли відійшов Яків від обличчя свого батька Ісаака, — то прийшов із полювання його брат Ісав.
Then he also made savory food, and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.”
Приготував і він їжу та приніс своєму батькові, і сказав батькові: Встань, мій батьку, і їж дичину свого сина, аби мене поблагословила твоя душа.
Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
І озвався до нього його батько Ісаак: Хто ти? А той відповів: Я твій син-первенець Ісав.
Then Isaac trembled violently, and said, “Who was he then that hunted game and brought it to me, so that I ate of all of it before you came, and blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.”
Ісаака охопив надзвичайно великий жах, і він сказав: Хто ж тоді зловив дичину і приніс мені? І, перш ніж ти прийшов, я з’їв усе і його поблагословив, — тож буде благословенним!
When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!”
Сталося ж, коли почув Ісав слова свого батька Ісаака, то закричав дуже гучним і пронизливим голосом, вигукнувши: Поблагослови ж і мене, батьку!
And he said, “Your brother came deceitfully and has taken away your blessing.”
Та він сказав йому: Твій брат прийшов і обманом забрав твоє благословення.
Then he said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob, for he has supplanted me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
А той сказав: Справедливо дано йому ім’я Яків. Адже ось уже вдруге він обманув мене: забрав моє первородство, а тепер забрав і моє благословення. І сказав Ісав своєму батькові: Чи не залишилося і мені благословення, батьку?
But Isaac replied to Esau, “Behold, I have made him your master, and all his relatives I have given to him as servants; and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. Now as for you then, what can I do, my son?”
У відповідь Ісаак сказав Ісаву: Якщо я зробив його паном над тобою, а всіх його братів я зробив його слугами і забезпечив його пшеницею і вином, то що для тебе зроблю, сину?
Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” So Esau lifted his voice and wept.
Та Ісав запитав свого батька: Чи в тебе є одне благословення, батьку? Поблагослови ж і мене, батьку! Коли Ісаак розчулився, Ісав голосно заволав і заплакав.
Then Isaac his father answered and said to him,
“Behold, away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling,
And away from the dew of heaven from above.
“Behold, away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling,
And away from the dew of heaven from above.
А у відповідь Ісаак, його батько, сказав йому: Ось, від багатства землі та від небесної роси згори буде твоє житло.
“By your sword you shall live,
And your brother you shall serve;
But it shall come about when you become restless,
That you will break his yoke from your neck.”
And your brother you shall serve;
But it shall come about when you become restless,
That you will break his yoke from your neck.”
Ти житимеш зі свого меча і служитимеш своєму братові. Але буде й так, що колись зламаєш і скинеш його ярмо зі своєї шиї.
So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
І став ворогувати Ісав з Яковом — через благословення, яким його поблагословив його батько. А про себе Ісав сказав: Хай пройдуть дні жалоби за моїм батьком, і тоді я вб’ю мого брата Якова.
Now when the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “Behold your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you.
Та Ревеці передали слова її старшого сина Ісава. Тож вона, пославши, покликала свого молодшого сина Якова, та й сказала йому: Ось твій брат Ісав погрожує вбити тебе.
“Now therefore, my son, obey my voice, and arise, flee to Haran, to my brother Laban!
Тому тепер, сину, послухай мого голосу: піднявшись, втікай до Месопотамії, до мого брата Лавана, у Харан.
“Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury subsides,
І поживи з ним деякий час, поки не пройде лють
until your brother’s anger against you subsides and he forgets what you did to him. Then I will send and get you from there. Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?”
і гнів твого брата на тебе, — він забуде те, що ти йому заподіяв! А тоді, пославши, я приведу тебе звідти… Щоби часом за один день не залишилася я без дітей — без вас обох.
Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of living because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these, from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”
А Ісаакові Ревека сказала: Набридло мені життя через дочок Хетових синів. Якщо візьме Яків дружину з дочок цієї землі, — то навіщо мені жити?
