Cain and Abel
Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.”
Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.”
І пізнав Адам Єву, жінку свою, і вона завагітніла, і породила Каїна, і сказала: „Набула чоловіка від Господа“.
Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
А далі вона породила брата йому Авеля. І був Авель пастух отари, а Каїн був рільник.
So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground.
І сталось по деякім часі, і приніс Каїн Богові жертву від плоду землі.
Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering;
А Авель, — він також приніс від своїх перворідних з отари та від їхнього лою. І зглянувся Господь на Авеля й на жертву його,
but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.
а на Каїна й на жертву його не зглянувся. І сильно розгнівався Каїн, і обличчя його похилилось.
Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
І сказав Господь Каїнові: „Чого ти розгнівався, і чого похилилось обличчя твоє?
“If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”
Отож, коли ти добре робитимеш, то підіймеш обличчя своє, а коли недобре, то в дверях гріх підстерігає. І до тебе його пожада́ння, а ти мусиш над ним панувати“.
Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
І говорив Каїн до Авеля, брата свого. І сталось, як були вони в полі, повстав Каїн на Авеля, брата свого, — і вбив його.
Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
І сказав Господь Каїнові: „Де Авель, твій брат?“ А той відказав: „Не знаю. Чи я сторож брата свого́?“
He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.
І сказав Господь: „Що́ ти зробив? Голос крови брата твого взиває до Мене з землі.
“Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
А тепер ти прокля́тий від землі, що розкрила уста свої, щоб прийняти кров твого брата з твоєї руки.
“When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.”
Коли бу́деш ти порати землю, вона більше не дасть тобі сили своєї. Мандрівником та заволокою будеш ти на землі“.
Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is too great to bear!
І сказав Каїн до Господа: „Більший мій гріх, аніж можна знести.
“Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
Ось Ти виганяєш сьогодні мене з цієї землі, і я буду ховатись від лиця Твого. І я стану мандрівником та заволокою на землі, і буде, — кожен, хто стріне мене, той уб'є мене“.
So the LORD said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
І промовив до нього Господь: „Через те кожен, хто вб'є Каїна, семикратно буде пімщений“. І вмістив Господь знака на Каїні, щоб не вбив його кожен, хто стріне його.
Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
І вийшов Каїн з-перед лиця Господнього, й осів у країні Нод, на схід від Едену.
Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son.
І Каїн пізнав свою жінку, і стала вона вагітна, і вродила Еноха. І збудував він місто, і назвав ім'я́ тому містові, як ім'я́ свого сина: Енох.
Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech.
І народився в Еноха Ірад, а Ірад породив Мегуяїла, а Мегуяїл породив Метушаїла, а Метушаїл породив Ламеха.
Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.
І взяв собі Ламех дві жінки, — ім'я одній Ада, а ймення другій Цілла.
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
І породила Ада Явала, — він був батьком тих, що сидять по наметах і мають череду.
His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.
А ймення брата його Ювал, — він був батьком усім, хто держить у рука́х гусла й сопілку.
As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
А Цілла також породила Тувалкаїна, що кував всіляку мідь та залізо. А сестра Тувалкаїнова Ноема́.
Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah,
Listen to my voice,
You wives of Lamech,
Give heed to my speech,
For I have killed a man for wounding me;
And a boy for striking me;
“Adah and Zillah,
Listen to my voice,
You wives of Lamech,
Give heed to my speech,
For I have killed a man for wounding me;
And a boy for striking me;
І промовив Ламех до жінок своїх: „Адо й Цілло, послухайте ви мого голосу, жони Ламехові, почуйте ви сло́ва мого! Бо якби я мужа забив за уразу свою, а дитину — за рану свою,
If Cain is avenged sevenfold,
Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
і як буде усемеро пімщений Каїн, то Ламех — у сімдесятеро й семеро!“
Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
І пізнав Адам ще свою жінку, — і сина вона породила. І назвала ймення йому: Сиф, бо „Бог дав мені інше насіння за Авеля, що забив його Каїн“.
