Amnon and Tamar
Now it was after this that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon the son of David loved her.

І сталося по тому, — мав Авесало́м, син Давидів, уродли́ву сестру́, а ім'я́ їй Тама́ра. І покохав її Амно́н, син Давидів.
Amnon was so frustrated because of his sister Tamar that he made himself ill, for she was a virgin, and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her.
І вболівав Амнон так, що він аж захво́рів через свою́ сестру́ Тамару, бо вона була дівчина, і Амнонові здавалося трудно щось їй зроби́ти.
But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd man.
А Амно́н мав това́риша, а ім'я́ йому́ Йонада́в, син Шім'ї, Давидового брата. І Йонада́в був чоловік дуже хитрий.
He said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so depressed morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Then Amnon said to him, “I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom.”
І він сказав йому: „Чого ти, царе́вичу, такий марни́й щора́нку? Чи ж не розповіси́ мені?“ І сказав йому Амнон: „Я кохаю Тамару, сестру́ брата свого Авесало́ма“.
Jonadab then said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill; when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me some food to eat, and let her prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat from her hand.’”
І сказав йому Йонадав: „Ляж на ложі своєму, і вдавай хворого. А коли при́йде твій батько, щоб побачити тебе, то скажи йому: Нехай при́йде сестра моя Тама́ра, і нехай підкріпи́ть мене хлібом, і нехай зробить на моїх оча́х ту ї́жу, щоб я бачив та їв із руки́ її“.
So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill; when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
І поклався Амнон, і вдавав хворого, а цар прийшов побачити його. І сказав Амнон до царя: „Нехай при́йде сестра моя Тамара, і нехай спече́ на моїх оча́х два млинці́, і я попої́м з її руки“.
Then David sent to the house for Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare food for him.”
І послав Давид до Тамари, до дому, говорячи: „Іди до дому твого брата Амнона, і пригото́в йому ї́жу“.
So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, and he was lying down. And she took dough, kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes.
І прийшла Тамара до дому свого брата Амнона, а він лежить. І взяла́ вона тіста, і замісила, і пригото́вила на оча́х його, та й спекла млинці.
She took the pan and dished them out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Have everyone go out from me.” So everyone went out from him.
І взяла́ вона сковорі́дку, і виложила перед ним, та він відмовився їсти. І сказав Амнон: „Випровадь від мене всіх людей“. І повихо́дили від нього всі люди.
Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand.” So Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them into the bedroom to her brother Amnon.
І сказав Амнон: „Принеси їжу до кімна́ти, і я з'їм із твоєї руки“. І взяла́ Тамара млинці́, що пригото́вила, та й прине́сла своєму братові Амнонові до кімна́ти.
When she brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”
І вона прине́сла до нього, щоб їв, а він схопи́в її, та й сказав до неї: „Ходи, ляж зо мною, моя се́стро!“
But she answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this disgraceful thing!
А вона йому відказала: „Ні, брате мій, не безче́сть мене, бо не ро́биться так в Ізраїлі! Не роби цієї гидо́ти
“As for me, where could I get rid of my reproach? And as for you, you will be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”
I куди я понесу́ свою га́ньбу? А ти станеш, як один із мерзо́тників в Ізраїлі. Ти переговори́ з царем, — і він не відмовить віддати мене тобі“.
However, he would not listen to her; since he was stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.
Та він не хотів слу́хати її голосу. І був він сильніший від неї, — і збезче́стив її, і лежав із нею...
Then Amnon hated her with a very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up, go away!”
І по цьому дуже знена́видів її Амнон великою не́навистю, бо ця не́нависть, якою він зненавидів її, була більша від любови, якою любив її. І сказав до неї Амнон: „Уставай, — іди собі!“
But she said to him, “No, because this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you have done to me!” Yet he would not listen to her.
А вона відказав йому: „Через це велике зло, по то́му, що зробив ти зо мною, хочеш ще ви́гнати мене?“ Та він не хотів її слу́хати.
Then he called his young man who attended him and said, “Now throw this woman out of my presence, and lock the door behind her.”
І покликав він юнака́ свого, слугу свого, та й сказав: „Ви́женіть оцю від мене геть, і замкни́ за нею двері“.
Now she had on a long-sleeved garment; for in this manner the virgin daughters of the king dressed themselves in robes. Then his attendant took her out and locked the door behind her.
А на ній була квітча́ста ту́ніка, бо так за́вжди вбира́лися царські́ до́чки, панни́. І його слуга ви́провадив її назо́вні, і замкнув за нею двері.
Tamar put ashes on her head and tore her long-sleeved garment which was on her; and she put her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went.
А Тама́ра поси́пала по́пелом свою го́лову, а квітча́сту ту́ніку, що була на ній, розде́рла, і поклала руку свою на го́лову свою, і все ходила та голоси́ла...
Then Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now keep silent, my sister, he is your brother; do not take this matter to heart.” So Tamar remained and was desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.
І сказав до неї брат її Авесало́м: „Чи брат твій Амнон був із тобою? А тепер, се́стро моя, мовчи, — брат же твій він! Не бери цієї речі до серця свого́“... І осіла Тамара, зні́вечена, у домі брата свого Авесало́ма.
Now when King David heard of all these matters, he was very angry.
А цар Давид почув про це все, — і сильно розгні́вався!
But Absalom did not speak to Amnon either good or bad; for Absalom hated Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.
І не говорив Авесало́м з Амноном ні про добре, ні про зле, бо Авесало́м зненавидів Амнона за те, що той збезче́стив сестру́ його Тама́ру.
Now it came about after two full years that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.
І сталося по двох ро́ках, і мав Авесалом стри́ження ове́ць у Баал-Хацорі, що при Єфремі, — і Авесало́м закли́кав усіх царськи́х синів.
Absalom Avenges Tamar
Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold now, your servant has sheepshearers; please let the king and his servants go with your servant.”
І прийшов Авесало́м до царя́ та й сказав: „Ось у раба твого стри́ження, — нехай пі́де цар та раби́ його з твоїм рабом“.
But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, we should not all go, for we will be burdensome to you.” Although he urged him, he would not go, but blessed him.
І сказав цар до Авесало́ма: „Ні, сину мій, не пі́демо ж ми всі, щоб не бути тобі на тяготу́“. І той сильно просив його, та він не хотів піти, але поблагослови́в його.
Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?”
І сказав Авесало́м: „А як ні, нехай пі́де з нами брат мій Амно́н!“ І сказав йому цар: „Чого вій пі́де з тобою?“
But when Absalom urged him, he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.
Та Авесало́м сильно просив його, і він послав з ним Амно́на та всіх царськи́х синів.
Absalom commanded his servants, saying, “See now, when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then put him to death. Do not fear; have not I myself commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.”
А Авесало́м загада́в юнака́м своїм, говорячи: „Дивіться, як Амнон звеселіє на серці від вина, то скажу вам: Ударте Амнона! — і ви вб'єте його. Не бійтеся, — чи ж не я загадав вам? Будьте міцні та відважнії!“
The servants of Absalom did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose and each mounted his mule and fled.
І зробили Авесаломові юнаки́ Амнонові, як загадав був Авесалом. А царські́ сини повставали, і сіли ве́рхи кожен на мула свого, та й повтіка́ли.
Now it was while they were on the way that the report came to David, saying, “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.”
І сталося, були вони ще в дорозі, а вістка прийшла́ до Давида така: „Авесалом повбивав усіх царськи́х синів, і не позосталося з них ні одно́го“.
Then the king arose, tore his clothes and lay on the ground; and all his servants were standing by with clothes torn.
І цар устав, і розде́р ша́ти свої, та й упав на землю, і всі слу́ги його стояли при ньому з розде́ртими ша́тами.
Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, responded, “Do not let my lord suppose they have put to death all the young men, the king’s sons, for Amnon alone is dead; because by the intent of Absalom this has been determined since the day that he violated his sister Tamar.
І відповів Йонадав, син Шім'ї, Давидового брата, та й сказав: „Нехай не каже мій пан: Усіх юнакі́в, царськи́х синів, повбивали, бо помер тільки сам Амно́н. Бо на нака́з Авесалома це було ви́рішене від дня, як той збезче́стив сестру́ його Тамару.
“Now therefore, do not let my lord the king take the report to heart, namely, ‘all the king’s sons are dead,’ for only Amnon is dead.”
А тепер нехай мій пан цар не кладе на своє серце такого, говорячи: Усі царські́ сини повмирали, — бо помер тільки сам Амнон“.
Now Absalom had fled. And the young man who was the watchman raised his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him by the side of the mountain.
І Авесалом утік. А юна́к вартівни́к звів свої очі й побачив, аж ось числе́нний народ іде дорогою, що була́ за ним, від боку гори.
Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; according to your servant’s word, so it happened.”
І сказав Йонадав до царя: „Ось прийшли царські́ сини, — як слово раба твого, так сталося“.
As soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came and lifted their voices and wept; and also the king and all his servants wept very bitterly.
І сталося, як скінчи́в він говорити, аж ось поприхо́дили царські сини, і підне́сли свій голос та й плакали. А також цар та всі слу́ги його плакали ве́льми ре́вним плаче́м...
Now Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.
А Авесалом утік, і пішов до Талмая, Амміхурового сина, царя ґешурського. А Давид був у жало́бі за сином своїм усі ті дні.
So Absalom had fled and gone to Geshur, and was there three years.
А Авесалом утік, і пішов до Ґешу́ру, і пробув там три ро́ки.
