  • David’s Psalm of Deliverance

    And David spoke the words of this song to the LORD in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
  • David’s Song of Praise

    David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul.
  • He said,
    “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
  • He sang:
    “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
  • My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge;
    My savior, You save me from violence.
  • my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
    He is my shield, the power that saves me,
    and my place of safety.
    He is my refuge, my savior,
    the one who saves me from violence.
  • “I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
    And I am saved from my enemies.
  • I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
    and he saved me from my enemies.
  • “For the waves of death encompassed me;
    The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me;
  • “The waves of death overwhelmed me;
    floods of destruction swept over me.
  • The cords of Sheol surrounded me;
    The snares of death confronted me.
  • The gravea wrapped its ropes around me;
    death laid a trap in my path.
  • “In my distress I called upon the LORD,
    Yes, I cried to my God;
    And from His temple He heard my voice,
    And my cry for help came into His ears.
  • But in my distress I cried out to the LORD;
    yes, I cried to my God for help.
    He heard me from his sanctuary;
    my cry reached his ears.
  • “Then the earth shook and quaked,
    The foundations of heaven were trembling
    And were shaken, because He was angry.
  • “Then the earth quaked and trembled.
    The foundations of the heavens shook;
    they quaked because of his anger.
  • “Smoke went up out of His nostrils,
    Fire from His mouth devoured;
    Coals were kindled by it.
  • Smoke poured from his nostrils;
    fierce flames leaped from his mouth.
    Glowing coals blazed forth from him.
  • “He bowed the heavens also, and came down
    With thick darkness under His feet.
  • He opened the heavens and came down;
    dark storm clouds were beneath his feet.
  • “And He rode on a cherub and flew;
    And He appeared on the wings of the wind.
  • Mounted on a mighty angelic being,b he flew,
    soaringc on the wings of the wind.
  • “And He made darkness canopies around Him,
    A mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky.
  • He shrouded himself in darkness,
    veiling his approach with dense rain clouds.
  • “From the brightness before Him
    Coals of fire were kindled.
  • A great brightness shone around him,
    and burning coalsd blazed forth.
  • “The LORD thundered from heaven,
    And the Most High uttered His voice.
  • The LORD thundered from heaven;
    the voice of the Most High resounded.
  • “And He sent out arrows, and scattered them,
    Lightning, and routed them.
  • He shot arrows and scattered his enemies;
    his lightning flashed, and they were confused.
  • “Then the channels of the sea appeared,
    The foundations of the world were laid bare
    By the rebuke of the LORD,
    At the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
  • Then at the command of the LORD,
    at the blast of his breath,
    the bottom of the sea could be seen,
    and the foundations of the earth were laid bare.
  • “He sent from on high, He took me;
    He drew me out of many waters.
  • “He reached down from heaven and rescued me;
    he drew me out of deep waters.
  • “He delivered me from my strong enemy,
    From those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.
  • He rescued me from my powerful enemies,
    from those who hated me and were too strong for me.
  • “They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    But the LORD was my support.
  • They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress,
    but the LORD supported me.
  • “He also brought me forth into a broad place;
    He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
  • He led me to a place of safety;
    he rescued me because he delights in me.
  • “The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness;
    According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
  • The LORD rewarded me for doing right;
    he restored me because of my innocence.
  • “For I have kept the ways of the LORD,
    And have not acted wickedly against my God.
  • For I have kept the ways of the LORD;
    I have not turned from my God to follow evil.
  • “For all His ordinances were before me,
    And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.
  • I have followed all his regulations;
    I have never abandoned his decrees.
  • “I was also blameless toward Him,
    And I kept myself from my iniquity.
  • I am blameless before God;
    I have kept myself from sin.
  • “Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
    According to my cleanness before His eyes.
  • The LORD rewarded me for doing right.
    He has seen my innocence.
  • “With the kind You show Yourself kind,
    With the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
  • “To the faithful you show yourself faithful;
    to those with integrity you show integrity.
  • With the pure You show Yourself pure,
    And with the perverted You show Yourself astute.
  • To the pure you show yourself pure,
    but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
  • “And You save an afflicted people;
    But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You abase.
  • You rescue the humble,
    but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them.
  • “For You are my lamp, O LORD;
    And the LORD illumines my darkness.
  • O LORD, you are my lamp.
    The LORD lights up my darkness.
  • “For by You I can run upon a troop;
    By my God I can leap over a wall.
  • In your strength I can crush an army;
    with my God I can scale any wall.
  • “As for God, His way is blameless;
    The word of the LORD is tested;
    He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
  • “God’s way is perfect.
    All the LORD’s promises prove true.
    He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.
  • “For who is God, besides the LORD?
    And who is a rock, besides our God?
  • For who is God except the LORD?
    Who but our God is a solid rock?
  • “God is my strong fortress;
    And He sets the blameless in His way.
  • God is my strong fortress,
    and he makes my way perfect.
  • “He makes my feet like hinds’ feet,
    And sets me on my high places.
  • He makes me as surefooted as a deer,
    enabling me to stand on mountain heights.
  • “He trains my hands for battle,
    So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
  • He trains my hands for battle;
    he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow.
  • “You have also given me the shield of Your salvation,
    And Your help makes me great.
  • You have given me your shield of victory;
    your helpe has made me great.
  • “You enlarge my steps under me,
    And my feet have not slipped.
  • You have made a wide path for my feet
    to keep them from slipping.
  • “I pursued my enemies and destroyed them,
    And I did not turn back until they were consumed.
  • “I chased my enemies and destroyed them;
    I did not stop until they were conquered.
  • “And I have devoured them and shattered them, so that they did not rise;
    And they fell under my feet.
  • I consumed them;
    I struck them down so they did not get up;
    they fell beneath my feet.
  • “For You have girded me with strength for battle;
    You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
  • You have armed me with strength for the battle;
    you have subdued my enemies under my feet.
  • “You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me,
    And I destroyed those who hated me.
  • You placed my foot on their necks.
    I have destroyed all who hated me.
  • “They looked, but there was none to save;
    Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them.
  • They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue.
    They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer.
  • “Then I pulverized them as the dust of the earth;
    I crushed and stamped them as the mire of the streets.
  • I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth;
    I trampled themf in the gutter like dirt.
  • “You have also delivered me from the contentions of my people;
    You have kept me as head of the nations;
    A people whom I have not known serve me.
  • “You gave me victory over my accusers.
    You preserved me as the ruler over nations;
    people I don’t even know now serve me.
  • “Foreigners pretend obedience to me;
    As soon as they hear, they obey me.
  • Foreign nations cringe before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they submit.
  • “Foreigners lose heart,
    And come trembling out of their fortresses.
  • They all lose their courage
    and come tremblingg from their strongholds.
  • “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock;
    And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation,
  • “The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock!
    May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted!
  • The God who executes vengeance for me,
    And brings down peoples under me,
  • He is the God who pays back those who harm me;
    he brings down the nations under me
  • Who also brings me out from my enemies;
    You even lift me above those who rise up against me;
    You rescue me from the violent man.
  • and delivers me from my enemies.
    You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies;
    you save me from violent opponents.
  • “Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the nations,
    And I will sing praises to Your name.
  • For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations;
    I will sing praises to your name.
  • He is a tower of deliverance to His king,
    And shows lovingkindness to His anointed,
    To David and his descendants forever.”
  • You give great victories to your king;
    you show unfailing love to your anointed,
    to David and all his descendants forever.”
