Darby Bible Translation

  • David Plans to Build a Temple

Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,
  • David Plans a Temple

And it came to pass when the king dwelt in his house, and Jehovah had given him rest round about from all his enemies,
  • that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains.”
  • that the king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedars, and the ark of God dwells under curtains.
  • Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your mind, for the LORD is with you.”
  • And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thy heart; for Jehovah is with thee.
  • But in the same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,
  • God's Covenant with David

And it came to pass that night that the word of Jehovah came to Nathan, saying,
  • “Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in?
  • Go and say to my servant, to David, Thus saith Jehovah: Wilt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?
  • “For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle.
  • For I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but I went about in a tent and in a tabernacle.
  • “Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’
  • In all my going about with all the children of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye me not a house of cedars?

  • God’s Covenant with David

“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.
  • And now, thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I took thee from the pasture-grounds, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel;
  • “I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.
  • and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are on the earth.
  • “I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly,
  • And I will appoint a place for my people, for Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and be disturbed no more; neither shall the sons of wickedness afflict them any more, as formerly,
  • even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also declares to you that the LORD will make a house for you.
  • and since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. And I have given thee rest from all thine enemies; and Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house.
  • “When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
  • When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
  • “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
  • It is he who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
  • “I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,
  • I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men;
  • but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
  • but my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before thee.
  • “Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’”
  • And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made firm for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
  • In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
  • According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

  • David’s Prayer

Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
  • David's Prayer of Thanksgiving

And king David went in and sat before Jehovah, and said, Who am I, Lord Jehovah, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
  • “And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord GOD.
  • And yet this hath been a small thing in thy sight, Lord Jehovah; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, Lord Jehovah?
  • “Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD!
  • And what can David say more to thee? for thou, Lord Jehovah, knowest thy servant.
  • “For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.
  • For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, to make thy servant know [it].
  • “For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
  • Wherefore thou art great, Jehovah Elohim; for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
  • “And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before Your people whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods?
  • And who is like thy people, like Israel, the one nation in the earth that God went to redeem to be a people to himself, and to make himself a name, and to do for them great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thyself from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
  • “For You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
  • And thou hast established to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever; and thou, Jehovah, art become their God.
  • “Now therefore, O LORD God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken,
  • And now, Jehovah Elohim, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house, fulfil it for ever, and do as thou hast said.
  • that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
  • And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is God over Israel; and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.
  • “For You, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You.
  • For thou, Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee a house; therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
  • “Now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant.
  • And now, Lord Jehovah, thou art that God, and thy words are true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant;
  • “Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken; and with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”
  • and now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever; for thou, Lord Jehovah, hast spoken it; and with thy blessing shall the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
