Ahab Covets Naboth’s Vineyard
Now it came about after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

І син Адера зібрав усю свою армію, пішов і оточив Самарію, а з ним — тридцять два царі, усі коні та колісниці. Вони прийшли і взяли в облогу Самарію, і воювали проти неї.
Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money.”
І він послав до Ахава, царя Ізраїля, у місто,
But Naboth said to Ahab, “The LORD forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”
і сказав йому: Так говорить син Адера: Твоє срібло і твоє золото — мої, твої жінки і твої діти — мої!
So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and ate no food.
А ізраїльський цар у відповідь сказав: Так, як ти сказав, володарю-царю! Я — твій, і все моє — твоє!
But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, “How is it that your spirit is so sullen that you are not eating food?”
І посли знову прийшли, і сказали: Так говорить син Адера: Я послав до тебе, щоб сказати: Твоє срібло і твоє золото, твоїх жінок і твоїх дітей, — мені їх віддаси!
So he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you a vineyard in its place.’ But he said, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’”
Бо в цей час вранці пришлю до тебе моїх слуг, і обшукаю твій дім і доми твоїх слуг, і буде: те, що приємне їхнім очам, на що тільки покладуть свої руки, те вони і візьмуть!
Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now reign over Israel? Arise, eat bread, and let your heart be joyful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”
І цар Ізраїля закликав усіх старійшин, і сказав: Тож зауважте і зрозумійте, що він шукає зачіпки, бо послав до мене за моїми жінками, за моїми синами і за моїми дочками! Моє срібло і моє золото — того я б від нього не стримував…
So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and sent letters to the elders and to the nobles who were living with Naboth in his city.
І старійшини та весь народ сказали йому: Не слухай і не погоджуйся!
Now she wrote in the letters, saying, “Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the people;
Тож він сказав послам сина Адера: Скажете вашому володареві: Усе, про що ти раніше посилав до твого раба, учиню, а цього наказу не зможу виконати. І відійшли мужі та принесли назад йому слово.
and seat two worthless men before him, and let them testify against him, saying, ‘You cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”
І послав до нього син Адера, кажучи: Таке нехай учинить мені Бог і таке додасть, якщо самарійської землі, скільки потрібно лисицям, вистачить для всього мого пішого народу!
Jezebel’s Plot
So the men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them, just as it was written in the letters which she had sent them.
А цар Ізраїля у відповідь сказав: Досить! Хай зігнений не хвалиться так, наче він прямий!
They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth at the head of the people.
І сталося, коли він йому відповів такими словами, той і всі царі, які були з ним, пили в наметах. І він сказав своїм слугам: Збудуйте траншеї! І напроти міста збудували траншеї.
Then the two worthless men came in and sat before him; and the worthless men testified against him, even against Naboth, before the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones.
І ось один пророк прийшов до ізраїльського царя і сказав: Так говорить Господь: Чи ти побачив увесь цей великий натовп? Ось Я сьогодні даю його у твої руки, і пізнаєш, що Я — Господь!
Then they sent word to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.”
І сказав Ахав: Через кого? А він відповів: Так говорить Господь: Через помічників начальників округів! А хто почне війну? — запитав Ахав. Той же відповів: Ти!
When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”
І Ахав зробив огляд помічників начальників округів, і було двісті тридцять. І після цього він порахував народ, кожного придатного до війни, — шістдесят тисяч.
When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
І він вийшов опівдні, а син Адера пив і був п’яний у Сокхоті, — він і царі (тридцять два царі-союзники, які були з ним).
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
І першими виступили помічники начальників округів. А ті посилали та сповіщали цареві Сирії, доповідаючи: Мужі вийшли із Самарії!
“Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth where he has gone down to take possession of it.
І сказав їм: Чи вони виходять у мирі? Візьміть їх живими; а якщо на війну, то схопіть їх живими.
“You shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Have you murdered and also taken possession?”’ And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth the dogs will lick up your blood, even yours.”’”
І хай не вийдуть з міста помічники начальників округів. А військо, яке було за ними, —
Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD.
кожний вдарив того, хто біля нього, і повторив кожний біля себе, і Сирія втекла, й Ізраїль погнався за ними. А син Адера, цар Сирії, врятувався на коні кіннотника.
“Behold, I will bring evil upon you, and will utterly sweep you away, and will cut off from Ahab every male, both bond and free in Israel;
І виступив ізраїльський цар, і захопив усіх коней і колісниці, і розгромив Сирію великим погромом.
and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and because you have made Israel sin.
Тоді до ізраїльського царя прийшов пророк і сказав: Кріпися, знай і гляди, що вчиниш, бо коли мине рік, син Адера, цар Сирії, виступить проти тебе!
“Of Jezebel also has the LORD spoken, saying, ‘The dogs will eat Jezebel in the district of Jezreel.’
А слуги царя Сирії сказали: Бог Ізраїля — Бог гір, а не Бог рівнин, через це Він переміг нас. Якщо ж воюватимемо проти них на рівнині, хіба не переможемо їх?
“The one belonging to Ahab, who dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and the one who dies in the field the birds of heaven will eat.”
Тож зроби таким чином: Відішли царів, кожного до своєї місцевості, а замість них постав сатрапів,
Surely there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do evil in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife incited him.
і замінимо твою силу згідно із силою, що відпала від тебе, і коня за коня, і колісниці за колісниці, і воюватимемо з ними на рівнині, і поборемо їх! І той послухався їхнього голосу, і зробив так.
He acted very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites had done, whom the LORD cast out before the sons of Israel.
І сталося, коли минав рік, то син Адера зробив огляд Сирії і пішов до Афеки на війну проти Ізраїля.
It came about when Ahab heard these words, that he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and fasted, and he lay in sackcloth and went about despondently.
А сини Ізраїля були пораховані й вийшли їм назустріч. Ізраїль отаборився напроти них, — наче дві отари кіз, а Сирія заповнила всю землю.
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
Та прийшов Божий чоловік і сказав цареві Ізраїля: Так говорить Господь: Через те, що Сирія сказала: Господь, Бог Ізраїля, є Богом гір, та Він не Богом рівнин, то Я передам цю велику армію у твої руки, і пізнаєш, що Я — Господь!
“Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days, but I will bring the evil upon his house in his son’s days.”
І ці отаборюються напроти тих сім днів, і сталося сьомого дня, настав бій, і побив Ізраїль Сирію, до ста тисяч піших в один день.
