New Living Translation

  • Job Says He Longs for God

    Then Job replied,
  • Job’s Eighth Speech: A Response to Eliphaz

    Then Job spoke again:
  • “Even today my complaint is rebellion;
    His hand is heavy despite my groaning.
  • “My complaint today is still a bitter one,
    and I try hard not to groan aloud.
  • “Oh that I knew where I might find Him,
    That I might come to His seat!
  • If only I knew where to find God,
    I would go to his court.
  • “I would present my case before Him
    And fill my mouth with arguments.
  • I would lay out my case
    and present my arguments.
  • “I would learn the words which He would answer,
    And perceive what He would say to me.
  • Then I would listen to his reply
    and understand what he says to me.
  • “Would He contend with me by the greatness of His power?
    No, surely He would pay attention to me.
  • Would he use his great power to argue with me?
    No, he would give me a fair hearing.
  • “There the upright would reason with Him;
    And I would be delivered forever from my Judge.
  • Honest people can reason with him,
    so I would be forever acquitted by my judge.
  • “Behold, I go forward but He is not there,
    And backward, but I cannot perceive Him;
  • I go east, but he is not there.
    I go west, but I cannot find him.
  • When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him;
    He turns on the right, I cannot see Him.
  • I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden.
    I look to the south, but he is concealed.
  • “But He knows the way I take;
    When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
  • “But he knows where I am going.
    And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.
  • “My foot has held fast to His path;
    I have kept His way and not turned aside.
  • For I have stayed on God’s paths;
    I have followed his ways and not turned aside.
  • “I have not departed from the command of His lips;
    I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
  • I have not departed from his commands,
    but have treasured his words more than daily food.
  • “But He is unique and who can turn Him?
    And what His soul desires, that He does.
  • But once he has made his decision, who can change his mind?
    Whatever he wants to do, he does.
  • “For He performs what is appointed for me,
    And many such decrees are with Him.
  • So he will do to me whatever he has planned.
    He controls my destiny.
  • “Therefore, I would be dismayed at His presence;
    When I consider, I am terrified of Him.
  • No wonder I am so terrified in his presence.
    When I think of it, terror grips me.
  • It is God who has made my heart faint,
    And the Almighty who has dismayed me,
  • God has made me sick at heart;
    the Almighty has terrified me.
  • But I am not silenced by the darkness,
    Nor deep gloom which covers me.
  • Darkness is all around me;
    thick, impenetrable darkness is everywhere.
