“Why are times not stored up by the Almighty,
And why do those who know Him not see His days?

“Some remove the landmarks;

Межі пересувають, займають отари та й гонять пасти, мовляв би, свої;
“They drive away the donkeys of the orphans;
They take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

Граблять осла в сиротини, у вдовицї беруть в заклад корову єдину;
“They push the needy aside from the road;
The poor of the land are made to hide themselves altogether.

Вбогих спихають з путя, пригноблені всї мусять ховатись.
“Behold, as wild donkeys in the wilderness
They go forth seeking food in their activity,
As bread for their children in the desert.

Се, — як осли дикі в степу, виходять вони на свою роботу, вставши рано, на здобуваннє (харчі); степ їх годує й дїтей їх;

Жнуть вони на полі чужому й збирають виноград у придавлених;
“They spend the night naked, without clothing,
And have no covering against the cold.

Нагі ночують люде, не маючи чим одягтися, нї вкритись на студенї;
“They are wet with the mountain rains
And hug the rock for want of a shelter.

Мокнуть на дощах з гори, туляться попід скелями.
“Others snatch the orphan from the breast,
And against the poor they take a pledge.

Рвуть вони од грудей сироту, вбогих закладами граблять.
“They cause the poor to go about naked without clothing,
And they take away the sheaves from the hungry.

Вони змушують їх блукати нагими, без одежі, й голодних — годуватись (збіраним) колоссєм;
“Within the walls they produce oil;
They tread wine presses but thirst.

Між мурами бють (нещасні) олїй про них, топчуть (грозди) в точилї, та й смагу терплять.
“From the city men groan,
And the souls of the wounded cry out;
Yet God does not pay attention to folly.

У містї стогнуть люде, душа гублена квилить, а Бог сього не боронить.
“Others have been with those who rebel against the light;
They do not want to know its ways
Nor abide in its paths.

Є між ними й вороги сьвітла, що не знають шляхів його, й не ходять стежками його.
“The murderer arises at dawn;
He kills the poor and the needy,
And at night he is as a thief.

Досьвіта встає убийник, вбиває бідного й нужденного, а ніччю стає злодїєм.
“The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight,
Saying, ‘No eye will see me.’
And he disguises his face.

Темряви й те око жде, що до перелюбок ласе; говорить: нїхто не побачить мене, — та й вид собі закриває.
“In the dark they dig into houses,
They shut themselves up by day;
They do not know the light.

В пітьмі підкопуються в доми, що по днинї собі їх запримітили; сьвітла вони не хотять знати.
“For the morning is the same to him as thick darkness,
For he is familiar with the terrors of thick darkness.

Бо густа тьма — се їх ранок, із мороком дружні вони, люба їм пітьма да страхи.
“They are insignificant on the surface of the water;
Their portion is cursed on the earth.

Такий є легкий собі — хоч би й поверх води. О, проклята доля його на землї! Нехай і не бачить дороги садів виноградних!

Посуха й спеки пожирають, хоч би й снїжну воду; оттак безодня — грішників.
“A mother will forget him;
The worm feeds sweetly till he is no longer remembered.
And wickedness will be broken like a tree.

Нехай відцурається такого матерня рідна утроба; нехай лакомляться на нього черви; нехай загине про його память; мов та деревина, нехай зломиться беззаконник!
“He wrongs the barren woman

Він гнобить бездїтну, що не роджала дитини, й вдовицї не чинить добра.
“But He drags off the valiant by His power;
He rises, but no one has assurance of life.

Він і дужих перемогає силою своєю; він устає, і нїхто не певний життя свого.
“He provides them with security, and they are supported;
And His eyes are on their ways.

А Бог подає йому безпеку, — він же ж на те й вповає — та очі його (Бога) видять таких поступки.
“They are exalted a little while, then they are gone;

Піднялись вони високо, — та ось і нема їх; падають і вмірають, як кожний на сьвітї, й неначе колоссє, стинаються.
