Job Affirms His Righteousness

Then Job continued his discourse and said,

1

І Йов далі вів мову свою та й казав:

2

“As God lives, who has taken away my right,
And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul,

2

„Як живий Бог, — відкинув Він право моє, і душу мою засмутив Всемогу́тній,

3

For as long as life is in me,
And the breath of God is in my nostrils,

3

і як довго в мені ще душа моя, і дух Божий у ні́здрях моїх, —

4

My lips certainly will not speak unjustly,
Nor will my tongue mutter deceit.

неправди уста́ мої не говори́тимуть, а язик мій не скаже ома́ни!

5

“Far be it from me that I should declare you right;
Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.

5

Борони мене, Боже, призна́ти вас за справедливих! Доки я не помру́, своєї невинности я не відкину від себе, —

6

“I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go.
My heart does not reproach any of my days.

за свою справедливість тримаюся міцно, — й її не пущу́, моє серце не буде ганьби́ти ні о́дного з днів моїх, —

7

The State of the Godless

“May my enemy be as the wicked
And my opponent as the unjust.

7

нехай буде мій ворог — немов той безбожник, а хто повстає проти мене — як кривдник!

8

“For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off,
When God requires his life?

8

Яка ж бо наді́я лукавому, коли відірве́, коли ві́зьме Бог душу його?

9

“Will God hear his cry
When distress comes upon him?

9

Чи Бог ви́слухає його крик, коли при́йде на нього нещастя?

10

“Will he take delight in the Almighty?
Will he call on God at all times?

10

Чи буде втіша́тися він Всемогутнім? Буде кликати Бога за кожного ча́су?

11

“I will instruct you in the power of God;
What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.

11

Я вас буду навчати про Божую руку, що є у Всемогутнього — я не сховаю, —

12

“Behold, all of you have seen it;
Why then do you act foolishly?

12

таж самі ви це бачили всі, то чого ж нісені́тниці пле́щете?

13

“This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty.

13

Така доля люди́ни безбожної, це спа́дщина насильників, що отри́мають від Всемогутнього:

14

“Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword;
And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread.

14

Як розмно́жаться діти його — то хіба для меча, а наща́дки його не наси́тяться хлібом!

15

“His survivors will be buried because of the plague,
And their widows will not be able to weep.

15

Позосталих по нім морови́ця сховає, і вдовиці його не заплачуть...

16

“Though he piles up silver like dust
And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,

16

Якщо накопи́чить він срібла, немо́в того по́роху, і наготу́є одежі, як глини,

17

He may prepare it, but the just will wear it
And the innocent will divide the silver.

17

то він наготу́є, а праведний вдягне, а срі́бло невинний поділить.

18

“He has built his house like the spider’s web,
Or as a hut which the watchman has made.

18

Він будує свій дім, як та міль, й як той сторож, що ставить собі куреня́,

19

“He lies down rich, but never again;
He opens his eyes, and it is no longer.

19

він лягає багатим, та більше не зробить того: свої очі відкриє — й немає його.

20

“Terrors overtake him like a flood;
A tempest steals him away in the night.

20

Страхі́ття дося́гнуть його, мов вода, вночі буря укра́де його,

21

“The east wind carries him away, and he is gone,
For it whirls him away from his place.

21

східній вітер його понесе́ — і мине́ться, і бурею схо́пить його з його місця...

22

“For it will hurl at him without sparing;
He will surely try to flee from its power.

22

Оце все Він кине на нього, — і не змилосе́рдиться, і від руки Його мусить той спішно втікати!

23

“Men will clap their hands at him
And will hiss him from his place.

23

Своїми доло́нями спле́сне над ним, і сви́сне над ним з свого місця.
