New King James Version

  • Surely God is good to Israel,
    To those who are pure in heart!
  • The Tragedy of the Wicked, and the Blessedness of Trust in God

    A Psalm of Asaph.

    Truly God is good to Israel,
    To such as are pure in heart.
  • But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling,
    My steps had almost slipped.
  • But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;
    My steps had nearly slipped.
  • For I was envious of the arrogant
    As I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
  • For I was envious of the boastful,
    When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
  • For there are no pains in their death,
    And their body is fat.
  • For there are no [a]pangs in their death,
    But their strength is firm.
  • They are not in trouble as other men,
    Nor are they plagued like mankind.
  • They are not in trouble as other men,
    Nor are they plagued like other men.
  • Therefore pride is their necklace;
    The garment of violence covers them.
  • Therefore pride serves as their necklace;
    Violence covers them like a garment.
  • Their eye bulges from fatness;
    The imaginations of their heart run riot.
  • Their [b]eyes bulge with abundance;
    They have more than heart could wish.
  • They mock and wickedly speak of oppression;
    They speak from on high.
  • They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression;
    They speak [c]loftily.
  • They have set their mouth against the heavens,
    And their tongue parades through the earth.
  • They set their mouth against the heavens,
    And their tongue walks through the earth.
  • Therefore his people return to this place,
    And waters of abundance are drunk by them.
  • Therefore his people return here,
    And waters of a full cup are drained by them.
  • They say, “How does God know?
    And is there knowledge with the Most High?”
  • And they say, “How does God know?
    And is there knowledge in the Most High?”
  • Behold, these are the wicked;
    And always at ease, they have increased in wealth.
  • Behold, these are the ungodly,
    Who are always at ease;
    They increase in riches.
  • Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure
    And washed my hands in innocence;
  • Surely I have [d]cleansed my heart in vain,
    And washed my hands in innocence.
  • For I have been stricken all day long
    And chastened every morning.
  • For all day long I have been plagued,
    And chastened every morning.
  • If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
    Behold, I would have betrayed the generation of Your children.
  • If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
    Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children.
  • When I pondered to understand this,
    It was troublesome in my sight
  • When I thought how to understand this,
    It was [e]too painful for me —
  • Until I came into the sanctuary of God;
    Then I perceived their end.
  • Until I went into the sanctuary of God;
    Then I understood their end.
  • Surely You set them in slippery places;
    You cast them down to destruction.
  • Surely You set them in slippery places;
    You cast them down to destruction.
  • How they are destroyed in a moment!
    They are utterly swept away by sudden terrors!
  • Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment!
    They are utterly consumed with terrors.
  • Like a dream when one awakes,
    O Lord, when aroused, You will despise their form.
  • As a dream when one awakes,
    So, Lord, when You awake,
    You shall despise their image.
  • When my heart was embittered
    And I was pierced within,
  • Thus my heart was grieved,
    And I was [f]vexed in my mind.
  • Then I was senseless and ignorant;
    I was like a beast before You.
  • I was so foolish and ignorant;
    I was like a beast before You.
  • Nevertheless I am continually with You;
    You have taken hold of my right hand.
  • Nevertheless I am continually with You;
    You hold me by my right hand.
  • With Your counsel You will guide me,
    And afterward receive me to glory.
  • You will guide me with Your counsel,
    And afterward receive me to glory.
  • Whom have I in heaven but You?
    And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.
  • Whom have I in heaven but You?
    And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
  • My flesh and my heart may fail,
    But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
  • My flesh and my heart fail;
    But God is the [g]strength of my heart and my portion forever.
  • For, behold, those who are far from You will perish;
    You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You.
  • For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish;
    You have destroyed all those who [h]desert You for harlotry.
  • But as for me, the nearness of God is my good;
    I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
    That I may tell of all Your works.
  • But it is good for me to draw near to God;
    I have put my trust in the Lord God,
    That I may declare all Your works.
