New Living Translation

  • The Pursuit of Wisdom Brings Security

    My son, if you will receive my words
    And treasure my commandments within you,
  • The Benefits of Wisdom

    My child,a listen to what I say,
    and treasure my commands.
  • Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
    Incline your heart to understanding;
  • Tune your ears to wisdom,
    and concentrate on understanding.
  • For if you cry for discernment,
    Lift your voice for understanding;
  • Cry out for insight,
    and ask for understanding.
  • If you seek her as silver
    And search for her as for hidden treasures;
  • Search for them as you would for silver;
    seek them like hidden treasures.
  • Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
    And discover the knowledge of God.
  • Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD,
    and you will gain knowledge of God.
  • For the LORD gives wisdom;
    From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
  • For the LORD grants wisdom!
    From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
  • He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
    He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
  • He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
    He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
  • Guarding the paths of justice,
    And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
  • He guards the paths of the just
    and protects those who are faithful to him.
  • Then you will discern righteousness and justice
    And equity and every good course.
  • Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair,
    and you will find the right way to go.
  • For wisdom will enter your heart
    And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
  • For wisdom will enter your heart,
    and knowledge will fill you with joy.
  • Discretion will guard you,
    Understanding will watch over you,
  • Wise choices will watch over you.
    Understanding will keep you safe.
  • To deliver you from the way of evil,
    From the man who speaks perverse things;
  • Wisdom will save you from evil people,
    from those whose words are twisted.
  • From those who leave the paths of uprightness
    To walk in the ways of darkness;
  • These men turn from the right way
    to walk down dark paths.
  • Who delight in doing evil
    And rejoice in the perversity of evil;
  • They take pleasure in doing wrong,
    and they enjoy the twisted ways of evil.
  • Whose paths are crooked,
    And who are devious in their ways;
  • Their actions are crooked,
    and their ways are wrong.
  • To deliver you from the strange woman,
    From the adulteress who flatters with her words;
  • Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman,
    from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman.
  • That leaves the companion of her youth
    And forgets the covenant of her God;
  • She has abandoned her husband
    and ignores the covenant she made before God.
  • For her house sinks down to death
    And her tracks lead to the dead;
  • Entering her house leads to death;
    it is the road to the grave.b
  • None who go to her return again,
    Nor do they reach the paths of life.
  • The man who visits her is doomed.
    He will never reach the paths of life.
  • So you will walk in the way of good men
    And keep to the paths of the righteous.
  • So follow the steps of the good,
    and stay on the paths of the righteous.
  • For the upright will live in the land
    And the blameless will remain in it;
  • For only the godly will live in the land,
    and those with integrity will remain in it.
  • But the wicked will be cut off from the land
    And the treacherous will be uprooted from it.
  • But the wicked will be removed from the land,
    and the treacherous will be uprooted.
