New Living Translation

  • The Words of Lemuel

The words of King Lemuel, the oracle which his mother taught him:
  • The Sayings of King Lemuel

The sayings of King Lemuel contain this message,a which his mother taught him.
  • What, O my son?
And what, O son of my womb?
And what, O son of my vows?
  • O my son, O son of my womb,
    O son of my vows,
  • Do not give your strength to women,
Or your ways to that which destroys kings.
  • do not waste your strength on women,
    on those who ruin kings.
  • It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
It is not for kings to drink wine,
Or for rulers to desire strong drink,
  • It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine.
    Rulers should not crave alcohol.
  • For they will drink and forget what is decreed,
And pervert the rights of all the afflicted.
  • For if they drink, they may forget the law
and not give justice to the oppressed.
  • Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to him whose life is bitter.
  • Alcohol is for the dying,
and wine for those in bitter distress.
  • Let him drink and forget his poverty
And remember his trouble no more.
  • Let them drink to forget their poverty
and remember their troubles no more.
  • Open your mouth for the mute,
For the rights of all the unfortunate.
  • Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves;
ensure justice for those being crushed.
  • Open your mouth, judge righteously,
And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.
  • Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless,
and see that they get justice.
