The Futility of All Endeavor

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher,
“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”

What advantage does man have in all his work
Which he does under the sun?

Что получают люди от своих тяжких трудов на протяжении жизни? Ничего.

A generation goes and a generation comes,
But the earth remains forever.

Люди живут и умирают, но земля остаётся навеки.

Also, the sun rises and the sun sets;
And hastening to its place it rises there again.

Солнце восходит, и солнце заходит, и снова спешит к месту восхода.

Blowing toward the south,
Then turning toward the north,
The wind continues swirling along;
And on its circular courses the wind returns.

Ветер дует на юг и дует на север, дует снова и снова, кружась, и возвращается туда, где он зародился.

All the rivers flow into the sea,
Yet the sea is not full.
To the place where the rivers flow,
There they flow again.

All things are wearisome;
Man is not able to tell it.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor is the ear filled with hearing.

Всё настолько утомительно, что трудно даже описать. Слова опять достигают нашего слуха, но не насыщают его, как и наши глаза не насыщаются тем, что видят они.

That which has been is that which will be,
And that which has been done is that which will be done.
So there is nothing new under the sun.

Как всё было, так всё и продолжается, будет сделано то, что уже было сделано, в этой жизни нет ничего нового.

Is there anything of which one might say,
“See this, it is new”?
Already it has existed for ages
Which were before us.

"Посмотри — это новое, " — мог бы сказать человек, но это уже было когда-то, это уже было здесь ещё до того, как мы появились.

There is no remembrance of earlier things;
And also of the later things which will occur,
There will be for them no remembrance
Among those who will come later still.

Того, что было давно, люди не помнят, то, что сейчас происходит, люди в будущем помнить не будут, и позднее другие люди не будут помнить того, что сделано было до них.

The Futility of Wisdom

I, the Preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Я, Учитель, был царём Израиля в Иерусалиме.

And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is a grievous task which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

Я решил посвятить себя поискам и изучению всего того, что делается в жизни, и понял — тяжко то, что делать нам определил Господь.

I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind.

Я взглянул на всё, творящееся на земле, и увидел — всё это потеря времени, то же самое, что пытаться поймать ветер.

What is crooked cannot be straightened and what is lacking cannot be counted.

Если что-то криво, ты не можешь выпрямить его, и если что-то утрачено, ты не можешь сказать, что оно здесь.

I said to myself, “Behold, I have magnified and increased wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.”

Я сказал себе: "Стал я очень мудрым, превзошёл мудростью всех царей, правивших до меня Иерусалимом, и мне известно, что такое в действительности мудрость и знания".

And I set my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly; I realized that this also is striving after wind.

Я посвятил свой разум познанию мудрости, познанию безрассудства и глупости и понял, что пытаться стать мудрым, всё равно что пытаться поймать ветер.

Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.

С большою мудростью приходит потерянность, и кто увеличивает мудрость, тот увеличивает скорбь.
