Gedaliah Is Murdered

In the seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal family and one of the chief officers of the king, along with ten men, came to Mizpah to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. While they were eating bread together there in Mizpah,

І сталося сьомого місяця, прийшов Ізмаї́л, син Нетанії, сина Елішамового, з насіння царсько́го, і вельможі царя, та десять люда з ним, до Ґедалії, Ахікамового сина, до Міцпи, і їли там ра́зом хліб у Міцпі.

Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him arose and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and put to death the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

І встав Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн, і десять люда, що були з ним, та й ударили Ґедалію, сина Ахікама, сина Шафанового, мечем! І вбив він того, кого вавилонський цар настанови́в був начальником над кра́єм.

Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him, that is with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

І повбивав Ізмаїл усіх юдеїв, що були з ним, з Ґедалією, у Міцпі, і халдеїв воякі́в, що знахо́дилися там.

Now it happened on the next day after the killing of Gedaliah, when no one knew about it,

І сталося другого дня по вбивстві Ґедалії, — а ніхто про це не знав, —

that eighty men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria with their beards shaved off and their clothes torn and their bodies gashed, having grain offerings and incense in their hands to bring to the house of the LORD.

і поприхо́дили люди з Сихему, з Шіло́ та з Самарії, вісімдеся́т люда оголеноборо́дих, і в подертій одежі та з нарі́заними знака́ми на тілі, а в їхній руці хлі́бна жертва та ла́дан, як прине́сення для Господнього дому.

Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went; and as he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!”

І вийшов Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн, навпроти них з Міцпи, ідучи́ та пла́чучи. І сталося, коли він спіткав їх, то промовив до них: „Прийдіть до Ґедалії, Ахікамового сина!“

Yet it turned out that as soon as they came inside the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men that were with him slaughtered them and cast them into the cistern.

І сталося, як прийшли вони до сере́дини міста, то їх порізав Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн, і повкидав їх до сере́дини ями, він та ті люди, що були з ним.

But ten men who were found among them said to Ishmael, “Do not put us to death; for we have stores of wheat, barley, oil and honey hidden in the field.” So he refrained and did not put them to death along with their companions.

Та знайшлося між ними десять люда, і вони сказали до Ізмаїла: „Не вбивай нас, бо ми маємо заховані в полі ска́рби: пшеницю, і ячмінь, і оливу, і мед“. І той спинився, і не повбивав їх серед їхніх братів.

Now as for the cistern where Ishmael had cast all the corpses of the men whom he had struck down because of Gedaliah, it was the one that King Asa had made on account of Baasha, king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.

А та яма, куди повкида́в Ізмаїл усі трупи тих людей, була яма велика, яку зробив був цар А́са проти Баеші, Ізраїльського царя, — її наповнив Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн, тру́пами.

Then Ishmael took captive all the remnant of the people who were in Mizpah, the king’s daughters and all the people who were left in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had put under the charge of Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; thus Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and proceeded to cross over to the sons of Ammon.

І Ізмаїл узяв у поло́н усю решту народу, що був у Міцпі, царськи́х дочо́к та ввесь наро́д, що зостався в Міцпі, якого Невузар'адан, начальник царсько́ї сторожі, доручив був Ґедалії, синові Ахікамовому. І забрав їх у поло́н Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн, і пішов, щоб перейти до Аммонових синів.

Johanan Rescues the People

But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done.

I почув Йоханан, син Кареахів, та всі військо́ві зверхники, що були з ним, про все те зло, що зробив Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн.

12

So they took all the men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and they found him by the great pool that is in Gibeon.

І взяли́ вони всіх тих людей, і пішли воювати з Ізмаїлом, сином Нетаніїним, і знайшли його при великій воді, що в Ґів'оні.

Now as soon as all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and the commanders of the forces that were with him, they were glad.

І сталося, як увесь наро́д, що був з Ізмаїлом, побачив Йоханана, сина Кареахового, та всіх військо́вих зверхииків, що були з ним, то зрадів.

14

So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.

І відвернувся ввесь народ, якого взяв був до поло́ну Ізмаїл з Міцпи, і вернулися, і пішли до Йоханана, сина Кареахового.

15

But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the sons of Ammon.

А Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїн, утік з вісьмома́ людьми́ від Йоханана, і пішов до Аммонових синів.

16

Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him took from Mizpah all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, that is, the men who were soldiers, the women, the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon.

І взяв Йоханан, син Кареахів, та всі військо́ві зверхники, що були з ним, усю решту народу, яку він вернув від Ізмаїла, сина Нетаніїного, з Міцпи, по то́му, як той убив Ґедалію, сина Ахікамового, мужів воякі́в, і жіно́к, і дітей, і е́внухів, що вернув з Ґів'ону.

And they went and stayed in Geruth Chimham, which is beside Bethlehem, in order to proceed into Egypt

І пішли вони й стали на нічлі́г в Ґерут-Кімгамі, що при Віфлеємі, щоб піти й утікти до Єгипту

because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

від халдеїв, бо вони боялися їх, бо Ізмаїл, син Нетаніїв, убив Ґедалію, сина Ахікамового, якого вавилонський цар настановив був начальником над кра́єм.
