The Choice Young Men
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god.
Господь разрешил Навуходоносору победить Иоакима, царя Иудеи, и унести много сосудов из Божьего храма. Навуходоносор отправил их в землю Сеннаар, в храм своих богов, и внёс сосуды в сокровищницу своих богов.
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his officials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the royal family and of the nobles,
Затем царь Навуходоносор дал приказ Асфеназу, самому главному начальнику евнухов, которые служили царю. Царь велел Асфеназу привести к нему в дом несколько иудейских юношей из семей вельмож и царей Израиля.
youths in whom was no defect, who were good-looking, showing intelligence in every branch of wisdom, endowed with understanding and discerning knowledge, and who had ability for serving in the king’s court; and he ordered him to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.
Царю нужны были только здоровые молодые люди, без всяких телесных недостатков. Они должны были быть красивыми и смышлёными, чтобы их было легко обучить дворцовой службе. Царь велел Асфеназу научить этих юношей из Израиля халдейскому языку и письменности.
The king appointed for them a daily ration from the king’s choice food and from the wine which he drank, and appointed that they should be educated three years, at the end of which they were to enter the king’s personal service.
Царь Навуходоносор назначил ежедневно выдавать этим юношам пищу и вино с царского стола. Он хотел, чтобы израильские юноши обучались три года, по истечении которых, некоторые из них должны были стать слугами царя Вавилонского.
Now among them from the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
Среди этих юношей были: Даниил, Анания, Мисаил и Азария. Все они были из колена Иуды.
Then the commander of the officials assigned new names to them; and to Daniel he assigned the name Belteshazzar, to Hananiah Shadrach, to Mishael Meshach and to Azariah Abed-nego.
Затем, Асфеназ дал иудейским юношам вавилонские имена: новое имя Даниила было Валтасар, новое имя Анании — Седрах, Мисаила — Мисах, а Азарии — Авденаго.
Daniel’s Resolve
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.
Даниил не хотел есть пищу и пить вино с царского стола, чтобы не оскверниться. Поэтому он попросил Асфеназа, чтобы тот разрешил ему не осквернять себя этим.
Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials,
Бог даровал Даниилу милость и расположение Асфеназа,
and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.”
и тот сказал Даниилу: "Я боюсь господина моего, царя. Царь приказал мне давать тебе эту пищу и вино. Если ты не будешь есть, то будешь выглядеть больным и слабым, хуже, чем другие юноши твоего возраста. Царь увидит это и разгневается на меня. Он может отрубить мне голову! И это будет по твоей вине".
But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
Тогда Даниил поговорил со своим надзирателем, которому Асфеназ приказал наблюдать за Даниилом, Ананией, Мисаилом и Азарией:
“Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink.
"Пожалуйста, сделай над нами опыт: в течение десяти дней не давай нам ничего кроме овощей и воды,
“Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
а затем, после десяти дней, сравни нас с другими юношами, которые едят царскую пищу. Ты сам посмотришь, кто выглядит здоровее, и решишь, чем кормить нас, рабов твоих".
So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.
И надзиратель согласился в течение десяти дней испытать Даниила, Ананию, Мисаила и Азарию.
At the end of ten days their appearance seemed better and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food.
По истечении десяти дней Даниил и его друзья выглядели здоровее, чем все другие юноши, которые ели пищу с царского стола.
So the overseer continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept giving them vegetables.
Тогда надзиратель Амельсар продолжал брать их особые яства, а вместо них давал Даниилу, Анании, Мисаилу и Азарии овощи.
As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every branch of literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all kinds of visions and dreams.
Бог даровал всем четверым мудрость и способности, чтобы научиться разным наукам и постичь многие писания, а Даниил умел ещё и объяснить всякие видения и сны.
Then at the end of the days which the king had specified for presenting them, the commander of the officials presented them before Nebuchadnezzar.
Царь хотел, чтобы все юноши обучались три года. По окончании назначенных царём трёх лет Асфеназ привёл всех их к царю Навуходоносору.
The king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s personal service.
Царь поговорил с ними и нашёл, что ни один из них не мог сравниться с Даниилом, Ананией, Мисаилом и Азарией. Так четверо юношей стали слугами у царя.
As for every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers who were in all his realm.
Каждый раз, когда царь спрашивал их о чём-либо важном, они проявляли глубокую мудрость и понимание. Царь находил их в десять раз умнее всех колдунов и мудрецов в своём царстве.
