Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them:
‘No one shall defile himself for a dead person among his people,
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them:
‘No one shall defile himself for a dead person among his people,
Instructions for the Priests
The LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
“A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean by touching the dead body of a relative.
The LORD said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
“A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean by touching the dead body of a relative.
except for his relatives who are nearest to him, his mother and his father and his son and his daughter and his brother,
The only exceptions are his closest relatives — his mother or father, son or daughter, brother,
also for his virgin sister, who is near to him because she has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.
or his virgin sister who depends on him because she has no husband.
‘He shall not defile himself as a relative by marriage among his people, and so profane himself.
But a priest must not defile himself and make himself unclean for someone who is related to him only by marriage.
‘They shall not make any baldness on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts in their flesh.
“The priests must not shave their heads or trim their beards or cut their bodies.
‘They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, for they present the offerings by fire to the LORD, the food of their God; so they shall be holy.
They must be set apart as holy to their God and must never bring shame on the name of God. They must be holy, for they are the ones who present the special gifts to the LORD, gifts of food for their God.
‘They shall not take a woman who is profaned by harlotry, nor shall they take a woman divorced from her husband; for he is holy to his God.
“Priests may not marry a woman defiled by prostitution, and they may not marry a woman who is divorced from her husband, for the priests are set apart as holy to their God.
‘You shall consecrate him, therefore, for he offers the food of your God; he shall be holy to you; for I the LORD, who sanctifies you, am holy.
You must treat them as holy because they offer up food to your God. You must consider them holy because I, the LORD, am holy, and I make you holy.
‘Also the daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by harlotry, she profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.
“If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she also defiles her father’s holiness, and she must be burned to death.
‘The priest who is the highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head nor tear his clothes;
nor shall he approach any dead person, nor defile himself even for his father or his mother;
He must not defile himself by going near a dead body. He may not make himself ceremonially unclean even for his father or mother.
nor shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am the LORD.
He must not defile the sanctuary of his God by leaving it to attend to a dead person, for he has been made holy by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD.
‘A widow, or a divorced woman, or one who is profaned by harlotry, these he may not take; but rather he is to marry a virgin of his own people,
He may not marry a widow, a woman who is divorced, or a woman who has defiled herself by prostitution. She must be a virgin from his own clan,
so that he will not profane his offspring among his people; for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.’”
so that he will not dishonor his descendants among his clan, for I am the LORD who makes him holy.”
“Speak to Aaron, saying, ‘No man of your offspring throughout their generations who has a defect shall approach to offer the food of his God.
“Give the following instructions to Aaron: In all future generations, none of your descendants who has any defect will qualify to offer food to his God.
‘For no one who has a defect shall approach: a blind man, or a lame man, or he who has a disfigured face, or any deformed limb,
No one who has a defect qualifies, whether he is blind, lame, disfigured, deformed,
or a hunchback or a dwarf, or one who has a defect in his eye or eczema or scabs or crushed testicles.
or is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or has a defective eye, or skin sores or scabs, or damaged testicles.
‘No man among the descendants of Aaron the priest who has a defect is to come near to offer the LORD’S offerings by fire; since he has a defect, he shall not come near to offer the food of his God.
No descendant of Aaron who has a defect may approach the altar to present special gifts to the LORD. Since he has a defect, he may not approach the altar to offer food to his God.
‘He may eat the food of his God, both of the most holy and of the holy,
However, he may eat from the food offered to God, including the holy offerings and the most holy offerings.
only he shall not go in to the veil or come near the altar because he has a defect, so that he will not profane My sanctuaries. For I am the LORD who sanctifies them.’”
Yet because of his physical defect, he may not enter the room behind the inner curtain or approach the altar, for this would defile my holy places. I am the LORD who makes them holy.”
