  • Sundry Rules for Priests

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • The Holiness of the Offerings

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy gifts of the sons of Israel, which they dedicate to Me, so as not to profane My holy name; I am the LORD.
  • “Speak to Aaron and his sons, that they separate[a] themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they do not profane My holy name by what they dedicate to Me: I am the Lord.
  • “Say to them, ‘If any man among all your descendants throughout your generations approaches the holy gifts which the sons of Israel dedicate to the LORD, while he has an uncleanness, that person shall be cut off from before Me; I am the LORD.
  • Say to them: ‘Whoever of all your descendants throughout your generations, who goes near the holy things which the children of Israel dedicate to the Lord, while he has [b]uncleanness upon him, that person shall be cut off from My presence: I am the Lord.
  • ‘No man of the descendants of Aaron, who is a leper or who has a discharge, may eat of the holy gifts until he is clean. And if one touches anything made unclean by a corpse or if a man has a seminal emission,
  • ‘Whatever man of the descendants of Aaron, who is a leper or has a discharge, shall not eat the holy offerings until he is clean. And whoever touches anything made unclean by a corpse, or a man who has had an emission of semen,
  • or if a man touches any teeming things by which he is made unclean, or any man by whom he is made unclean, whatever his uncleanness;
  • or whoever touches any creeping thing by which he would be made unclean, or any person by whom he would become unclean, whatever his uncleanness may be —
  • a person who touches any such shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat of the holy gifts unless he has bathed his body in water.
  • the person who has touched any such thing shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat the holy offerings unless he washes his body with water.
  • ‘But when the sun sets, he will be clean, and afterward he shall eat of the holy gifts, for it is his food.
  • And when the sun goes down he shall be clean; and afterward he may eat the holy offerings, because it is his food.
  • ‘He shall not eat an animal which dies or is torn by beasts, becoming unclean by it; I am the LORD.
  • Whatever dies naturally or is torn by beasts he shall not eat, to defile himself with it: I am the Lord.
  • ‘They shall therefore keep My charge, so that they will not bear sin because of it and die thereby because they profane it; I am the LORD who sanctifies them.
  • ‘They shall therefore keep My [c]ordinance, lest they bear sin for it and die thereby, if they profane it: I the Lord sanctify them.
  • ‘No layman, however, is to eat the holy gift; a sojourner with the priest or a hired man shall not eat of the holy gift.
  • ‘No outsider shall eat the holy offering; one who [d]dwells with the priest, or a hired servant, shall not eat the holy thing.
  • ‘But if a priest buys a slave as his property with his money, that one may eat of it, and those who are born in his house may eat of his food.
  • But if the priest buys a person with his money, he may eat it; and one who is born in his house may eat his food.
  • ‘If a priest’s daughter is married to a layman, she shall not eat of the offering of the gifts.
  • If the priest’s daughter is married to an outsider, she may not eat of the holy offerings.
  • ‘But if a priest’s daughter becomes a widow or divorced, and has no child and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s food; but no layman shall eat of it.
  • But if the priest’s daughter is a widow or divorced, and has no child, and has returned to her father’s house as in her youth, she may eat her father’s food; but no outsider shall eat it.
  • ‘But if a man eats a holy gift unintentionally, then he shall add to it a fifth of it and shall give the holy gift to the priest.
  • ‘And if a man eats the holy offering unintentionally, then he shall restore a holy offering to the priest, and add one-fifth to it.
  • ‘They shall not profane the holy gifts of the sons of Israel which they offer to the LORD,
  • They shall not profane the holy offerings of the children of Israel, which they offer to the Lord,
  • and so cause them to bear punishment for guilt by eating their holy gifts; for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.’”
  • or allow them to bear the guilt of trespass when they eat their holy offerings; for I the Lord sanctify them.’ ”

  • Flawless Animals for Sacrifice

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Offerings Accepted and Not Accepted

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘Any man of the house of Israel or of the aliens in Israel who presents his offering, whether it is any of their votive or any of their freewill offerings, which they present to the LORD for a burnt offering —
  • “Speak to Aaron and his sons, and to all the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘Whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, who [e]offers his sacrifice for any of his vows or for any of his freewill offerings, which they offer to the Lord as a burnt offering —
  • for you to be accepted — it must be a male without defect from the cattle, the sheep, or the goats.
  • you shall offer of your own free will a male without blemish from the cattle, from the sheep, or from the goats.
  • ‘Whatever has a defect, you shall not offer, for it will not be accepted for you.
  • Whatever has a defect, you shall not offer, for it shall not be acceptable on your behalf.
  • ‘When a man offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD to fulfill a special vow or for a freewill offering, of the herd or of the flock, it must be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it.
  • And whoever offers a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord, to fulfill his vow, or a freewill offering from the cattle or the sheep, it must be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it.
  • ‘Those that are blind or fractured or maimed or having a running sore or eczema or scabs, you shall not offer to the LORD, nor make of them an offering by fire on the altar to the LORD.
  • Those that are blind or broken or maimed, or have an [f]ulcer or eczema or scabs, you shall not offer to the Lord, nor make an offering by fire of them on the altar to the Lord.
  • ‘In respect to an ox or a lamb which has an overgrown or stunted member, you may present it for a freewill offering, but for a vow it will not be accepted.
  • Either a bull or a lamb that has any limb too long or too short you may offer as a freewill offering, but for a vow it shall not be accepted.
  • ‘Also anything with its testicles bruised or crushed or torn or cut, you shall not offer to the LORD, or sacrifice in your land,
  • ‘You shall not offer to the Lord what is bruised or crushed, or torn or cut; nor shall you make any offering of them in your land.
  • nor shall you accept any such from the hand of a foreigner for offering as the food of your God; for their corruption is in them, they have a defect, they shall not be accepted for you.’”
  • Nor from a foreigner’s hand shall you offer any of these as the bread of your God, because their corruption is in them, and defects are in them. They shall not be accepted on your behalf.’ ”
  • Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • “When an ox or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall remain seven days with its mother, and from the eighth day on it shall be accepted as a sacrifice of an offering by fire to the LORD.
  • “When a bull or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall be seven days with its mother; and from the eighth day and thereafter it shall be accepted as an offering made by fire to the Lord.
  • “But, whether it is an ox or a sheep, you shall not kill both it and its young in one day.
  • Whether it is a cow or ewe, do not kill both her and her young on the same day.
  • “When you sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted.
  • And when you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, offer it of your own free will.
  • “It shall be eaten on the same day, you shall leave none of it until morning; I am the LORD.
  • On the same day it shall be eaten; you shall leave none of it until morning: I am the Lord.
  • “So you shall keep My commandments, and do them; I am the LORD.
  • “Therefore you shall keep My commandments, and perform them: I am the Lord.
  • “You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be sanctified among the sons of Israel; I am the LORD who sanctifies you,
  • You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be [g]hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,
  • who brought you out from the land of Egypt, to be your God; I am the LORD.”
  • who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord.”
