    Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after their departure from the land of Egypt, saying,
  • “Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head
  • Take the sum of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, every male, according to their polls;
  • from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies.
  • from twenty years and upward, all that go forth to military service in Israel: ye shall number them according to their hosts, thou and Aaron.
  • “With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household.
  • And with you there shall be a man for every tribe, a man who is the head of his father's house.
  • “These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;

    And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
  • of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;

  • for the children of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
  • of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
  • for Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
  • of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
  • for Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
  • of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
  • for Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran;
  • of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;

  • “These are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.”
  • These were those summoned of the assembly, princes of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the thousands of Israel.

  • Of the sons of Simeon: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, those that were numbered of them, by the number of the names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • their numbered men of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
  • Of the sons of Gad, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

  • their numbered men of the tribe of Gad were 45,650.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
  • Of the sons of Judah, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

  • their numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74,600.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
  • Of the sons of Issachar, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

  • Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,
  • Of the sons of Joseph: of the children of Ephraim: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • their numbered men of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.

  • their numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.
  • Of the sons of Dan, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,
  • Of the sons of Dan: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • their numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62,700.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

  • their numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41,500.

  • Of the sons of Naphtali, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,
  • Of the sons of Naphtali: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:
  • their numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
  • those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
  • These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his father’s household.
  • These are those that were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, the twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.
  • So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war in Israel,
  • And all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, according to their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service in Israel,
  • even all the numbered men were 603,550.
  • all they that were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.

  • Levites Exempted

    The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe.

  • For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying,

  • “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel.
  • Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel.
  • “But you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle.
  • But thou, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all its vessels; and they shall serve it, and round about the tabernacle shall they encamp;
  • “So when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman who comes near shall be put to death.
  • and when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encampeth, the Levites shall set it up; and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death.
  • “The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies.
  • And the children of Israel shall encamp every man in his camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts;
  • “But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.”
  • but the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there come not wrath upon the assembly of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.
  • Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all which the LORD had commanded Moses, so they did.
  • And the children of Israel did so; according to all that Jehovah had commanded Moses, so did they.
