Spies View the Land
Then the LORD spoke to Moses saying,
Then the LORD spoke to Moses saying,
І промовляв Господь до Мойсея, говорячи:
“Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.”
„Пошли людей, і вони розвідають ханаа́нський край, що Я даю Ізраїлевим синам; пошлете по одно́му чоловікові від пле́мени своїх батьків, кожного начальника в них“.
So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the command of the LORD, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel.
І послав їх Мойсей з пустині Пара́н за Господнім нака́зом. Усі вони мужі достойні, — вони го́лови Ізраїлевих синів.
These then were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
А оце ймення їх: для Рувимового племени — Шаммуа, син Заккурів;
from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
для Іссаха́рового племени — Їґ'ал, син Йосипів;
from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
для Веніями́нового племени — Палті, син Рафуїв;
from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
для Завуло́нового племени — Ґаддіїл, син Содіїв;
from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
для Йо́сипового племени, для племени Манасіїного — Ґадді, син Сусіїв;
from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
для Да́нового племени — Амміїл, син Ґемалліїв;
from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
для Аси́рового племени — Сетур, син Михаїлів;
from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
для Нефтали́мового племени — Нахбі, син Вофсіїв;
These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; but Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
Оце ймення тих людей, що Мойсей послав був розві́дати той край. І назвав Мойсей Осію, Навинового сина: Ісу́с.
When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, he said to them, “Go up there into the Negev; then go up into the hill country.
І послав їх Мойсей розві́дати край ханаанський, та й промовив до них: „Підіть тут на пі́вдень, і вві́йдете на го́ру,
“See what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many.
та й побачите той край — який він, і наро́д, що сидить у ньому, — чи си́льний він, чи слаби́й, чи мали́й він, чи числе́нний?
“How is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they like open camps or with fortifications?
І який той край, що він сидить у ньому, — чи він добрий чи злий? І які ті міста, що він сидить у них, — чи в табо́рах, чи в тверди́нях?
“How is the land, is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not? Make an effort then to get some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.
І яка та земля, — чи масна́ вона, чи пісна́? Чи є на ній дерево, чи ні? І будьте відва́жні, і візьміть з пло́ду землі; а дні ці — дні виноградного первопло́ду“.
So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, at Lebo-hamath.
І зняли́ся вони, і розвідали той Край від пустині Цін аж до Рехова, у напрямі до Хамоту.
When they had gone up into the Negev, they came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
І пішли вони на пі́вдень, і прибули́ аж до Хевро́ну, а там були Ахіман, Шешай та Талмай, наща́дки ве́летня. А Хеврон був збудований за сім літ перед Цоаном єгипетським.
Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and the figs.
І прибули́ вони аж до долини Ешколу, і витяли там галузку з одним гроном винограду, і вдвох поне́сли його на жерди́ні; також узяли́ із гранатів та з фіґ.
That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.
Те місце назвали: Нахал-Ешкол, через те гроно, що Ізраїлеві сини витяли були там.
The Spies’ Reports
When they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days,
І вернулися вони з ро́звідки того кра́ю по сорока́ днях.
they proceeded to come to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.
І пішли, і прийшли вони до Мойсея й до Ааро́на та до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, до пустині Паран, до Кадешу, і здали́ справу їм та всій тій громаді, і показали плід того кра́ю.
Thus they told him, and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
І вони розповіли́ йому та й сказали: „Прибули́ ми до кра́ю, куди ти послав був нас, — а він тече молоком та медом, а оце плід його!
“Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there.
Та наро́д той, що сидить у тім кра́ї, міцни́й, а міста укрі́плені, дуже великі. А також бачили ми там нащадків ве́летня...
“Amalek is living in the land of the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”
Амали́к сидить у краї південнім, а хітте́янин, і євусе́янин, і аморе́янин сидять на горі, а ханаане́янин сидить над морем та при Йорда́ні“.
Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.”
А Калев утихомирював наро́д перед Мойсеєм та й сказав: „Конче вві́йдемо ми й заволоді́ємо ним, бо ми справді переможем його!“
But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.”
Та люди, що ходили з ним, сказали: „Ми не зможемо ввійти до того наро́ду, бо він сильніший за нас“.
So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size.
І пустили вони між Ізраїлевими синами злу вістку про той край, що розві́дали його, говорячи: „Той край, що ми перейшли́ по ньому, щоб розвідати його, це край, який поїдає своїх ме́шканців. А ввесь той народ, що ми бачили в ньому, люди високі на зріст.
“There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
І там ми бачили ве́летнів, синів Ена́ка, з роду велетнів, і були́ ми в своїх оча́х немов та сарана́, і такими були ми і в їхніх оча́х“.
