New Living Translation

  • Arad Conquered

When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.
  • Victory over the Canaanites

The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were approaching on the road through Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites and took some of them as prisoners.
  • So Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”
  • Then the people of Israel made this vow to the LORD: “If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroya all their towns.”
  • The LORD heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called Hormah.
  • The LORD heard the Israelites’ request and gave them victory over the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their towns, and the place has been called Hormahb ever since.
  • Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey.

  • The Bronze Snake

Then the people of Israel set out from Mount Hor, taking the road to the Red Seac to go around the land of Edom. But the people grew impatient with the long journey,
  • The people spoke against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.”
  • and they began to speak against God and Moses. “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die here in the wilderness?” they complained. “There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink. And we hate this horrible manna!”

  • The Bronze Serpent

The LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
  • So the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people, and many were bitten and died.
  • So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and you; intercede with the LORD, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.
  • Then the people came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take away the snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.
  • Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.”
  • Then the LORD told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!”
  • And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.
  • So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!
  • Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth.

  • Israel’s Journey to Moab

The Israelites traveled next to Oboth and camped there.
  • They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the east.
  • Then they went on to Iye-abarim, in the wilderness on the eastern border of Moab.
  • From there they set out and camped in Wadi Zered.
  • From there they traveled to the valley of Zered Brook and set up camp.
  • From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
  • Then they moved out and camped on the far side of the Arnon River, in the wilderness adjacent to the territory of the Amorites. The Arnon is the boundary line between the Moabites and the Amorites.
  • Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD,
    “Waheb in Suphah,
And the wadis of the Arnon,
  • For this reason The Book of the Wars of the LORD speaks of “the town of Waheb in the area of Suphah, and the ravines of the Arnon River,
  • And the slope of the wadis
That extends to the site of Ar,
And leans to the border of Moab.”
  • and the ravines that extend as far as the settlement of Ar on the border of Moab.”
  • From there they continued to Beer, that is the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”
  • From there the Israelites traveled to Beer,d which is the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Assemble the people, and I will give them water.”
  • Then Israel sang this song:
“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
  • There the Israelites sang this song:
    “Spring up, O well!
    Yes, sing its praises!
  • “The well, which the leaders sank,
Which the nobles of the people dug,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”
And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah,
  • Sing of this well,
    which princes dug,
    which great leaders hollowed out
    with their scepters and staffs.”
Then the Israelites left the wilderness and proceeded on through Mattanah,
  • and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
  • Nahaliel, and Bamoth.
  • and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah which overlooks the wasteland.
  • After that they went to the valley in Moab where Pisgah Peak overlooks the wasteland.e

  • Two Victories

Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,

  • Victory over Sihon and Og

The Israelites sent ambassadors to King Sihon of the Amorites with this message:
  • “Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s highway until we have passed through your border.”
  • “Let us travel through your land. We will be careful not to go through your fields and vineyards. We won’t even drink water from your wells. We will stay on the king’s road until we have passed through your territory.”
  • But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. So Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.
  • But King Sihon refused to let them cross his territory. Instead, he mobilized his entire army and attacked Israel in the wilderness, engaging them in battle at Jahaz.
  • Then Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon was Jazer.
  • But the Israelites slaughtered them with their swords and occupied their land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. They went only as far as the Ammonite border because the boundary of the Ammonites was fortified.f
  • Israel took all these cities and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her villages.
  • So Israel captured all the towns of the Amorites and settled in them, including the city of Heshbon and its surrounding villages.
  • For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.
  • Heshbon had been the capital of King Sihon of the Amorites. He had defeated a former Moabite king and seized all his land as far as the Arnon River.
  • Therefore those who use proverbs say,
“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
  • Therefore, the ancient poets wrote this about him:
“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt!
Let the city of Sihon be restored.
  • “For a fire went forth from Heshbon,
    A flame from the town of Sihon;
    It devoured Ar of Moab,
The dominant heights of the Arnon.
  • A fire flamed forth from Heshbon,
a blaze from the city of Sihon.
    It burned the city of Ar in Moab;
it destroyed the rulers of the Arnon heights.
  • “Woe to you, O Moab!
You are ruined, O people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
    And his daughters into captivity,
    To an Amorite king, Sihon.
  • What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab!
You are finished, O worshipers of Chemosh!
Chemosh has left his sons as refugees,
his daughters as captives of Sihon, the Amorite king.
  • “But we have cast them down,
Heshbon is ruined as far as Dibon,
Then we have laid waste even to Nophah,
    Which reaches to Medeba.”
  • We have utterly destroyed them,
    from Heshbon to Dibon.
We have completely wiped them out
as far away as Nophah and Medeba.g
  • Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
  • So the people of Israel occupied the territory of the Amorites.
  • Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.
  • After Moses sent men to explore the Jazer area, they captured all the towns in the region and drove out the Amorites who lived there.
  • Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out with all his people, for battle at Edrei.
  • Then they turned and marched up the road to Bashan, but King Og of Bashan and all his people attacked them at Edrei.
  • But the LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
  • The LORD said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, along with all his people and his land. Do the same to him as you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.”
  • So they killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no remnant left him; and they possessed his land.
  • And Israel killed King Og, his sons, and all his subjects; not a single survivor remained. Then Israel occupied their land.
