Darby Bible Translation

  • Levites to Be Priesthood

    Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
  • The Sons of Aaron

    And these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Jehovah spoke with Moses on mount Sinai.
  • These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
  • And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
  • These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests.
  • These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, who were consecrated to exercise the priesthood.
  • But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.
  • And Nadab and Abihu died before Jehovah when they offered strange fire before Jehovah in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons; and Eleazar and Ithamar exercised the priesthood in the presence of Aaron their father.
  • Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Duties of the Levites

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.
  • Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him;
  • “They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.
  • and they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole assembly, before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.
  • “They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.
  • And they shall keep all the utensils of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.
  • “You shall thus give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel.
  • And thou shalt give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given to him out of the children of Israel.
  • “So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that they may keep their priesthood, but the layman who comes near shall be put to death.”
  • And Aaron and his sons shalt thou appoint that they may attend to their priest's office; and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death.
  • Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine.
  • And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of every firstborn that breaketh open the womb among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine;
  • “For all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am the LORD.”
  • for every firstborn is mine. On the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both of man and beast; mine shall they be: I am Jehovah.
  • Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
  • Registration of the Levites

    And Jehovah spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
  • “Number the sons of Levi by their fathers’ households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number.”
  • Number the sons of Levi according to their fathers' houses, after their families; every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.
  • So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, just as he had been commanded.
  • And Moses numbered them, according to the commandment of Jehovah, -- as he had been commanded.
  • These then are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.
  • And these are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.
  • These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei;
  • And these are the names of the sons of Gershon according to their families: Libni and Shimei.
  • and the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel;
  • And the sons of Kohath according to their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
  • and the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ households.
  • And the sons of Merari according to their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses.
  • Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites.
  • The Gershonites

    Of Gershon, the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimites: these are the families of the Gershonites.
  • Their numbered men, in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, even their numbered men were 7,500.
  • Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, those that were numbered of them were seven thousand five hundred.
  • The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward,
  • The families of the Gershonites encamped behind the tabernacle westward.
  • and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael.
  • And the prince of the father's house of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael.

  • Duties of the Priests

    Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,
  • And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting was: the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the curtain of the entrance to the tent of meeting.
  • and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them.
  • And the hangings of the court, and the curtain of the entrance to the court, which surrounds the tabernacle and the altar, and the cords thereof for all its service.
  • Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.
  • The Kohathites

    And of Kohath, the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.
  • In the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600, performing the duties of the sanctuary.
  • According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand six hundred, who kept the charge of the sanctuary.
  • The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the southward side of the tabernacle,
  • The families of the sons of Kohath encamped on the side of the tabernacle southward.
  • and the leader of the fathers’ households of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
  • And the prince of the father's house of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
  • Now their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them;
  • And their charge was the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, and the curtain, and all that belongs to its service.
  • and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the chief of the leaders of Levi, and had the oversight of those who perform the duties of the sanctuary.
  • And the prince of princes of the Levites was Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest: he had the oversight of them that kept the charge of the sanctuary.
  • Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.
  • The Merarites

    Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari.
  • Their numbered men in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, were 6,200.
  • And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand two hundred.
  • The leader of the fathers’ households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the northward side of the tabernacle.
  • And the prince of the father's house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They encamped on the side of the tabernacle northward.
  • Now the appointed duties of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its equipment, and the service concerning them,
  • And the charge of the sons of Merari consisted in the oversight of the boards of the tabernacle, and its bars, and its pillars, and its bases, and all its furniture, and all that belongs to its service,
  • and the pillars around the court with their sockets and their pegs and their cords.
  • and the pillars of the court round about, and their bases, and their pegs, and their cords.
  • Now those who were to camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, are Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but the layman coming near was to be put to death.
  • Moses and Aaron

    And those who encamped before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, were Moses, and Aaron and his sons, who kept the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death.
  • All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the command of the LORD by their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22,000.
  • All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of Jehovah, according to their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand.

  • Firstborn Redeemed

    Then the LORD said to Moses, “Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and make a list of their names.
  • Firstborn Sons Redeemed

    And Jehovah said to Moses, Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.
  • “You shall take the Levites for Me, I am the LORD, instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the sons of Israel.”
  • And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am Jehovah) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites, instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.
  • So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, just as the LORD had commanded him;
  • And Moses numbered, as Jehovah had commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel.
  • and all the firstborn males by the number of names from a month old and upward, for their numbered men were 22,273.
  • And all the firstborn males, by the number of the names, from a month old and upward, according to their numbering, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.
  • Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel and the cattle of the Levites. And the Levites shall be Mine; I am the LORD.
  • Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Jehovah.
  • “For the ransom of the 273 of the firstborn of the sons of Israel who are in excess beyond the Levites,
  • And for those that are to be ransomed, the two hundred and seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are in excess over the Levites,
  • you shall take five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take them in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs),
  • thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll, according to the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them, -- twenty gerahs the shekel;
  • and give the money, the ransom of those who are in excess among them, to Aaron and to his sons.”
  • and thou shalt give the money unto Aaron and unto his sons for those in excess among them who are to be ransomed.
  • So Moses took the ransom money from those who were in excess, beyond those ransomed by the Levites;
  • And Moses took the ransom-money from them that were over and above those who were ransomed by the Levites;
  • from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, 1,365.
  • of the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, a thousand three hundred and sixty-five [shekels], according to the shekel of the sanctuary.
  • Then Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and to his sons, at the command of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  • And Moses gave the money of them that were ransomed to Aaron and to his sons, according to the commandment of Jehovah, -- as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
