Darby Bible Translation

  • John the Baptist Beheaded

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus,
  • The Beheading of John

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
  • and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
  • and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: *he* is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him.
  • For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.
  • For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother.
  • For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
  • For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
  • Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet.
  • And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet.
  • But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
  • But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod;
  • so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
  • whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.
  • Having been prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
  • But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist.
  • Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests.
  • And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given.
  • He sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
  • And he sent and beheaded John in the prison;
  • And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
  • and his head was brought upon a dish, and was given to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her mother.
  • His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.
  • And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and came and brought word to Jesus.

  • Five Thousand Fed

Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
  • The Feeding of the Five Thousand

And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities.
  • When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.
  • And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm.
  • When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
  • But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.
  • But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!”
  • But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give *ye* them to eat.
  • They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”
  • But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes.
  • And He said, “Bring them here to Me.”
  • And he said, Bring them here to me.
  • Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,
  • And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.
  • and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets.
  • And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full.
  • There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.
  • But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

  • Jesus Walks on the Water

Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.
  • Jesus Walks on Water

And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds.
  • After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.
  • And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when even was come, he was alone there,
  • But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary.
  • but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
  • And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.
  • But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea.
  • When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear.
  • And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, It is an apparition. And they cried out through fear.
  • But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
  • But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is *I*: be not afraid.
  • Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
  • And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be *thou*, command me to come to thee upon the waters.
  • And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
  • And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus.
  • But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
  • But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
  • Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
  • And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?
  • When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.
  • And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell.
  • And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”
  • But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son.
  • When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
  • Jesus Heals at Gennesaret

And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret.
  • And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick;
  • And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill,
  • and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.
  • and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well.
