New Living Translation

  • Tradition and Commandment

Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,
  • Jesus Teaches about Inner Purity

Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,
  • “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”
  • “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”
  • And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
  • Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?
  • “For God said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’
  • For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’a and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’b
  • “But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God,
  • But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’
  • he is not to honor his father or his mother.’ And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
  • In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents.c And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.
  • “You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:
  • You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,
  • ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,
BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
  • ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
  • ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’”
  • Their worship is a farce,
for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’d
  • After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand.
  • Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand.
  • It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
  • It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”
  • Then the disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”
  • Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?”
  • But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted.
  • Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted,
  • “Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
  • so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.”

  • The Heart of Man

Peter said to Him, “Explain the parable to us.”
  • Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”
  • Jesus said, “Are you still lacking in understanding also?
  • “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked.
  • “Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?
  • “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.
  • “But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.
  • But the words you speak come from the heart — that’s what defiles you.
  • “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
  • For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
  • “These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”
  • These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”

  • The Syrophoenician Woman

Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon.

  • The Faith of a Gentile Woman

Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
  • And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.”
  • A Gentilee woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”
  • But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us.”
  • But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”
  • But He answered and said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
  • Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep — the people of Israel.”
  • But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”
  • But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”
  • And He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
  • Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”
  • But she said, “Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
  • She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”
  • Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed at once.
  • “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.

  • Healing Crowds

Departing from there, Jesus went along by the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there.

  • Jesus Heals Many People

Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.
  • And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.
  • A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.
  • So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.
  • The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.

  • Four Thousand Fed

And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, “I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

  • Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.”
  • The disciples said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?”
  • The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?”
  • And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
  • Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?”
They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.”
  • And He directed the people to sit down on the ground;
  • So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground.
  • and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
  • Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd.
  • And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full.
  • They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.
  • And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
  • There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children.
  • And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
  • Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan.
