The Preaching of John the Baptist

Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

1

Тими ж днями прихо́дить Іван Христитель, і проповідує в пустині юдейській,

2

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

та й каже: „Покайтесь, бо набли́зилось Царство Небесне!“

3

For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said,
“THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!’”

Бо він той, що про нього сказав Ісая пророк, промовляючи: „Голос того, хто кличе: В пустині готуйте дорогу для Господа, рівняйте стежки Йому́!“

Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Сам же Іван мав одежу собі з верблю́жого во́лосу, і пояс ремінний на сте́гнах своїх; а пожива для нього була́ сарана́ та мед польови́й.

Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan;

Тоді до нього вихо́див Єрусалим, і вся Юдея, і вся йорда́нська око́лиця,

and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

і в річці Йорда́ні христились від нього, і визнавали гріхи свої.

7

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Як побачив же він багатьох фарисе́їв та саддуке́їв, що приходять на хрищення, то промовив до них: „Роде зміїний, — хто вас надоуми́в утікати від гніву майбутнього?

8

“Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;

Отож, — учиніть гідний плід покая́ння!

and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father’; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.

І не ду́майте говорити в собі: „Ми маємо отця Авраама“. Кажу́ бо я вам, що Бог може піднести дітей Авраамові з цього камі́ння!

10

“The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Бо вже до корі́ння дерев і сокира прикла́дена: кожне ж дерево, що доброго пло́ду не родить, буде зрубане та й в огонь буде вкинене.

11

“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Я хрищу́ вас водою на покая́ння, але Той, Хто йде по мені, поту́жніший від мене: я недосто́йний понести взуття́ Йому! Він христитиме вас Святим Духом й огнем.

12

“His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

У руці Своїй має Він ві́ячку, і перечистить Свій тік: пшеницю Свою Він збере до засі́ків, а полову попа́лить у вогні невгаси́мім“.

The Baptism of Jesus

Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.

Тоді прибуває Ісус із Галілеї над Йорда́н до Івана, щоб христитись від ньо́го.

14

But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”

14

Але перешкоджа́в він Йому й говорив: „Я повинен христитнсь від Тебе, і чи Тобі йти до мене?“

15

But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.

15

А Ісус відповів і сказав йому: „Допусти це тепер, бо так годи́ться нам ви́повнити усю праведність“. Тоді допустив він Його.

16

After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,

І охристившись, Ісус зараз вийшов із води. І ось небо розкрилось, і побачив Іван Духа Божого, що спускався, як голуб, і схо́див на Нього.

17

and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

17

І ось голос почувся із неба: „Це Син Мій Улю́блений, що Його Я вподо́бав!“
