Darby Bible Translation

  • Introduction

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us,
  • Dedication to Theophilus

Forasmuch as many have undertaken to draw up a relation concerning the matters fully believed among us,
  • just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,
  • as those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses of and attendants on the Word have delivered them to us,
  • it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus;
  • it has seemed good to *me* also, accurately acquainted from the origin with all things, to write to thee with method, most excellent Theophilus,
  • so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.
  • that thou mightest know the certainty of those things in which thou hast been instructed.

  • Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
  • The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.
  • They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.
  • And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
  • But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
  • And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
  • Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division,
  • And it came to pass, as he fulfilled his priestly service before God in the order of his course,
  • according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
  • it fell to him by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter into the temple of the Lord to burn incense.
  • And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering.
  • And all the multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense.
  • And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.
  • And an angel of [the] Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
  • Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.
  • And Zacharias was troubled, seeing [him], and fear fell upon him.
  • But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John.
  • But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias, because thy supplication has been heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
  • “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
  • And he shall be to thee joy and rejoicing, and many shall rejoice at his birth.
  • “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb.
  • For he shall be great before [the] Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with [the] Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
  • “And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.
  • And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to [the] Lord their God.
  • “It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
  • And *he* shall go before him in [the] spirit and power of Elias, to turn hearts of fathers to children, and disobedient ones to [the] thoughts of just [men], to make ready for [the] Lord a prepared people.
  • Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”
  • And Zacharias said to the angel, How shall I know this, for *I* am an old man, and my wife advanced in years?
  • The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
  • And the angel answering, said to him, *I* am Gabriel, who stand before God, and I have been sent to speak to thee, and to bring these glad tidings to thee;
  • “And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
  • and behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, till the day in which these things shall take place, because thou hast not believed my words, the which shall be fulfilled in their time.
  • The people were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering at his delay in the temple.
  • And the people were awaiting Zacharias, and they wondered at his delaying in the temple.
  • But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he kept making signs to them, and remained mute.
  • But when he came out he could not speak to them, and they recognised that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them, and continued dumb.
  • When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home.
  • And it came to pass, when the days of his service were completed, he departed to his house.
  • After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying,
  • Now after these days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
  • “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men.”
  • Thus has [the] Lord done to me in [these] days in which he looked upon [me] to take away my reproach among men.

  • And whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
  • “For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.

In the house of David His servant —
