Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.

Говорив же Він і до учнів: Був один багатий чоловік, котрий мав управителя, якого звинуватили, нібито він розтрачує його майно.
“And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’
Покликавши його, сказав йому: Що це я чую про тебе? Дай звіт за своє управління, бо більше не зможеш керувати!
“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.
Став міркувати собі управитель: Що маю робити, — мій пан позбавляє мене управління? Копати не маю сили, жебракувати соромлюся.
‘I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’
Знаю, що зроблю: коли буду усунений від управління, то хай приймуть мене до своїх домів!
“And he summoned each one of his master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
І, покликавши кожного з боржників свого пана, запитав першого: Скільки винен ти моєму панові?
“And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’
Той відповів: Сто мірок [1] олії. І сказав він йому: Візьми свою розписку, швидко сідай і напиши: п’ятдесят!
“Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’
Потім запитав другого: А ти скільки винен? Той відказав: Сто мірок [2] пшениці. Каже йому: Візьми свою розписку й напиши: вісімдесят.
“And his master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light.
І похвалив пан нечесного управителя, бо той мудро вчинив. Адже сини цього світу мудріші від синів світла у своєму роді.
“And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.
І Я вам кажу: Набувайте собі друзів з мамони [3] неправди, щоб коли вона зникне, прийняли вас до вічних осель.
“He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.
Вірний у найменшому — і у великому вірний; несправедливий у найменшому — і у великому несправедливий.
“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?
Тож коли в неправедному багатстві ви не були вірні, то хто вам довірить справжнє?
“And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?
І коли в чужому ви не були вірні, то хто вам дасть ваше?
“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
Жодний раб не може двом панам служити: або одного буде ненавидіти, а другого любитиме; або одного буде триматися, а другим нехтуватиме. Не можете служити Богові й мамоні!
Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him.
Чули все це фарисеї, які були грошолюбами, і насміхалися з Нього.
And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.
А Він сказав їм: Ви вдаєте із себе праведних перед людьми; Бог же знає ваші серця, бо те, що серед людей високе, — огидне перед Богом.
“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the gospel of the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.
Закон і пророки були до Івана. Відтоді благовіститься Боже Царство, і кожний його здобуває силою.
“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.
Швидше небо й земля проминуть, ніж пропаде хоч одна риска із Закону.
“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.
Кожний, хто залишає свою дружину й бере іншу, чинить перелюб; і хто одружується на розлученій із чоловіком, — також чинить перелюб.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.
Один чоловік був багатий, одягався в багряницю та вісон і розкішно бенкетував щодня.
“And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
А другий — бідний, на ім’я Лазар, лежав перед його ворітьми в струпах
and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.
і бажав насититися тим, що падало зі столу багатого; приходили пси й лизали його рани.
“Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
Сталося, що бідний помер, і віднесли його ангели на лоно Авраама; помер же й багатий, і його поховали.
“In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.
І, терплячи муки аду, він звів свої очі й побачив здалека Авраама та Лазаря на його лоні,
“And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’
й закричав, гукаючи: Батьку Аврааме, змилосердься наді мною і пошли Лазаря, щоби змочив кінчик свого пальця у воді й охолодив мій язик, бо мучуся в цьому полум’ї!
“But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.
Та Авраам промовив: Сину, згадай, як ти одержував своє добро за свого життя, а Лазар — одне лихо. А тепер він тут втішається, ти ж — мучишся.
‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’
І, крім усього цього, між нами й вами лежить велика безодня, щоб ті, які бажають перейти звідси до вас, не змогли, і щоби звідти до нас не переходили!
“And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house —
Той же відказав: Благаю тебе, батьку, пошли його до дому мого батька,
for I have five brothers — in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
бо маю п’ятьох братів, нехай засвідчить їм, щоб і вони не прийшли на це місце страждання!
“But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’
Та Авраам відповів: Вони мають Мойсея та пророків: хай їх слухають!
“But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’
А той продовжував: Ні, батьку Аврааме, коли ж хто з мертвих прийде до них, то покаються!
