Darby Bible Translation

  • Preparing the Passover

    Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.
  • The Plot to Kill Jesus

    Now the feast of unleavened bread, which [is] called the passover, drew nigh,
  • The chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people.
  • and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
  • And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve.
  • And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariote, being of the number of the twelve.
  • And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them.
  • And he went away and spoke with the chief priests and captains as to how he should deliver him up to them.
  • They were glad and agreed to give him money.
  • And they were rejoiced, and agreed to give him money.
  • So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd.
  • And he came to an agreement to do it, and sought an opportunity to deliver him up to them away from the crowd.
  • Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
  • The Last Supper

    And the day of unleavened bread came, in which the passover was to be killed.
  • And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.”
  • And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat [it].
  • They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?”
  • But they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare [it]?
  • And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.
  • And he said to them, Behold, as ye enter into the city a man will meet you, carrying an earthen pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he goes in;
  • “And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’
  • and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher says to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples?
  • “And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.”
  • And *he* will shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
  • And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
  • And having gone they found it as he had said to them; and they prepared the passover.

  • The Lord’s Supper

    When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.
  • The Lord's Supper Instituted

    And when the hour was come, he placed himself at table, and the [twelve] apostles with him.
  • And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
  • And he said to them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.
  • for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
  • For I say unto you, that I will not eat any more at all of it until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
  • And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;
  • And having received a cup, when he had given thanks he said, Take this and divide it among yourselves.
  • for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”
  • For I say unto you, that I will not drink at all of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God come.
  • And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
  • And having taken a loaf, when he had given thanks, he broke [it], and gave [it] to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
  • And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
  • In like manner also the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
  • “But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.
  • Moreover, behold, the hand of him that delivers me up [is] with me on the table;
  • “For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
  • and the Son of man indeed goes as it is determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is delivered up.
  • And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.
  • And *they* began to question together among themselves who then it could be of them who was about to do this.

  • Who Is Greatest

    And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest.
  • Who is the Greatest?

    And there was also a strife among them which of them should be held to be [the] greatest.
  • And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’
  • And he said to them, The kings of the nations rule over them, and they that exercise authority over them are called benefactors.
  • “But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
  • But *ye* [shall] not [be] thus; but let the greater among you be as the younger, and the leader as he that serves.
  • “For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
  • For which [is] greater, he that is at table or he that serves? [Is] not he that is at table? But *I* am in the midst of you as the one that serves.
  • “You are those who have stood by Me in My trials;
  • But *ye* are they who have persevered with me in my temptations.
  • and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you
  • And *I* appoint unto you, as my Father has appointed unto me, a kingdom,
  • that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat;
  • Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

    And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you, to sift [you] as wheat;
  • but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
  • but *I* have besought for thee that thy faith fail not; and *thou*, when once thou hast been restored, confirm thy brethren.
  • But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!”
  • And he said to him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death.
  • And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
  • And he said, I tell thee, Peter, [the] cock shall not crow to-day before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
  • And He said to them, “When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.”
  • And he said to them, When I sent you without purse and scrip and sandals, did ye lack anything? And they said, Nothing.
  • And He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.
  • He said therefore to them, But now he that has a purse let him take [it], in like manner also a scrip, and he that has none let him sell his garment and buy a sword;
  • “For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.”
  • for I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned with [the] lawless: for also the things concerning me have an end.
  • They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
  • And they said, Lord, behold here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough.

  • The Garden of Gethsemane

    And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.
  • Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

    And going forth he went according to his custom to the mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him.
  • When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
  • And when he was at the place he said to them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
  • And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray,
  • And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and having knelt down he prayed,
  • saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
  • saying, Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me: -- but then, not my will, but thine be done.
  • Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
  • And an angel appeared to him from heaven strengthening him.
  • And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.
  • And being in conflict he prayed more intently. And his sweat became as great drops of blood, falling down upon the earth.
  • When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,
  • And rising up from his prayer, coming to the disciples, he found them sleeping from grief.
  • and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
  • And he said to them, Why sleep ye? rise up and pray that ye enter not into temptation.

  • Jesus Betrayed by Judas

    While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him.
  • Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

    As he was yet speaking, behold, a crowd, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went on before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him.
  • But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
  • And Jesus said to him, Judas, deliverest thou up the Son of man with a kiss?
  • When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
  • And they who were around him, seeing what was going to follow, said [to him], Lord, shall we smite with [the] sword?
  • And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
  • And a certain one from among them smote the bondman of the high priest and took off his right ear.
  • But Jesus answered and said, “Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
  • And Jesus answering said, Suffer thus far; and having touched his ear, he healed him.
  • Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber?
  • And Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, who were come against him, Have ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks?
  • “While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”
  • When I was day by day with you in the temple ye did not stretch out your hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of darkness.

  • Jesus’ Arrest

    Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance.
  • Peter Denies Jesus

    And having laid hold on him, they led him [away], and they led [him] into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed afar off.
  • After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them.
  • And they having lit a fire in the midst of the court and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
  • And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.”
  • And a certain maid, having seen him sitting by the light, and having fixed her eyes upon him, said, And this [man] was with him.
  • But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
  • But he denied [him], saying, Woman, I do not know him.
  • A little later, another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
  • And after a short time another seeing him said, And *thou* art of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not.
  • After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.”
  • And after the lapse of about one hour another stoutly maintained it, saying, In truth this [man] also was with him, for also he is a Galilaean.
  • But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
  • And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, [the] cock crew.
  • The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”
  • And the Lord, turning round, looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice.
  • And he went out and wept bitterly.
  • And Peter, going forth without, wept bitterly.
  • Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him,
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

    And the men who held him mocked him, beating [him];
  • and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?”
  • and covering him up, asked him saying, Prophesy, who is it that struck thee?
  • And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming.
  • And they said many other injurious things to him.

  • Jesus before the Sanhedrin

    When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying,
  • Jesus Before the Council

    And when it was day, the elderhood of the people, both [the] chief priests and scribes, were gathered together, and led him into their council, saying,
  • “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe;
  • If *thou* art the Christ, tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not at all believe;
  • and if I ask a question, you will not answer.
  • and if I should ask [you], ye would not answer me at all, nor let me go;
  • “But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD.”
  • but henceforth shall the Son of man be sitting on the right hand of the power of God.
  • And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.”
  • And they all said, *Thou* then art the Son of God? And he said to them, *Ye* say that I am.
  • Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
  • And they said, What need have we any more of witness, for we have heard ourselves out of his mouth?
