New King James Version

  • Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain.
  • Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

Now it happened [a]on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands.
  • But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
  • And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”
  • And Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
  • But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:
  • how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?”
  • how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?”
  • And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
  • And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
  • On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
  • Healing on the Sabbath

Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered.
  • The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.
  • So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.
  • But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” And he got up and came forward.
  • But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood.
  • And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?”
  • Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or [b]to destroy?”
  • After looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored.
  • And when He had looked around at them all, He said to [c]the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored [d]as whole as the other.
  • But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.
  • But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

  • Choosing the Twelve

It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
  • The Twelve Apostles

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
  • And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:
  • And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:
  • Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;
  • Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;
  • and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;
  • Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;
  • Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
  • Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.
  • Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,
  • Jesus Heals a Great Multitude

And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases,
  • who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.
  • as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed.
  • And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.
  • And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

  • The Beatitudes

And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
  • The Beatitudes

Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:
    “Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
  • “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
  • Blessed are you who hunger now,
    For you shall be filled.[e]
Blessed are you who weep now,
    For you shall laugh.
  • “Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
  • Blessed are you when men hate you,
    And when they exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
  • “Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.
  • Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.
  • “But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.
  • Jesus Pronounces Woes

“But woe to you who are rich,
For you have received your consolation.
  • “Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
  • Woe to you who are full,
    For you shall hunger.
Woe to you who laugh now,
For you shall mourn and weep.
  • “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.
  • Woe [f]to you when [g]all men speak well of you,
For so did their fathers to the false prophets.
  • “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
  • Love Your Enemies

“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
  • bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
  • bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.
  • “Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.
  • To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.
  • “Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.
  • Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.
  • “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.
  • And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
  • “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
  • “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
  • “If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
  • And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
  • “If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.
  • And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
  • “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
  • But love your enemies, do good, and lend, [h]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.
  • “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
  • Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
  • “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.
  • Do Not Judge

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
  • “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure — pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
  • Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
  • And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?
  • And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?
  • “A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.
  • A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.
  • “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
  • And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?
  • “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
  • Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
  • “For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.
  • A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit

“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
  • “For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.
  • For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.
  • “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.
  • A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [i]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

  • Builders and Foundations

“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
  • Build on the Rock

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
  • “Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:
  • Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
  • he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
  • He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was [j]founded on the rock.
  • “But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
  • But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it [k]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”
